A two-volume, detailed account of a trans-continental auto touring excursion, taken in the summer of 1931 by New Rochelle physicist Arthur B. Hussey, his wife Gertrude, and his mother Alice. The account is illustrated with photographs, many taken by Arthur Hussey, which capture scenic attractions across the American West. The narrative describes in depth the nature of their travels, the character of their accommodations, the many individuals they encountered, the activities in which they engaged, and the landscapes through which they passed.

LeRoy Crawford scrapbooks of travels

Five scrapbooks kept by LeRoy Crawford during trips he made with his niece Etta Crawford. Each volume contains a typewritten travelogue as well as a variety of original photographs, postcards, images from magazines, cartes-de-visite, and other ephemera. Each volume was assembled by LeRoy and Etta in Chase's Lake, New York. The first photograph album (1901) depicts LeRoy and Henrietta's travels in Tennessee, Mexico, and Cuba. The second volume (1902-1903) describes the Crawfords' travels on the Northern Pacific Railroad ("this train was in all respects the most complete and comfortable one that I have ever seen," LeRoy noted) from St. Paul to Seattle, where they visited the Port Orchard Navy Yard and Moran shipyard (includes photographs of the Ocean Queen and battleship Nebraska during the early phases of their construction). The scrapbook also follows the Crawfords' visits to Oregon, San Francisco, Mt. Tamalpais, British Colombia, and San Francisco, as well as their voyage on the S.S. Newport to Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Columbia. The third scrapbook (1907), titled "The Eden Tour of Forty Days," describes their travels to Jamaica and the West Indies aboard the RMS Thames, including stops in Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, Barbados, Trinidad, Panama, and the Bahamas. The 1909 album consists mainly of postcards which were acquired while the Crawfords were traveling on the Union Pacific to Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alberta, and British Columbia (on the Canadian Pacific Railroad), and also includes postcards from the Alaska Yukon Pacific Expedition (1909). The final album (1911) follows the Crawfords as they again sailed on the RMS Thames and stopped in Cuba before touring Jamaica by car.

Alice D. Perkins travel scrabooks of trips to Colorado, California and Mexico

The scrapbook covers two trips, by train, that Perkins took with Raymond-Whitcomb, Inc. The first is a trip to Colorado and California in 1882 and the second is a trip to Mexico in 1888. The first excursion made stops at Pueblo and Denver, Colorado; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and Yosemite National Park, California. The second excursion made stops at Chihuahua, Zacatecas, Quéretaro, and Mexico City, Mexico. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, brochures, pamphlets, postcards, as well as a "Pocket Guide to Mexico," and "Brief Guide to Mexico City." There is also a handwritten reminiscence of the excursions written by Perkins' granddaughter in 1920.

Diary of travels through California

Diary details travels by train and driving excursions (by horse-drawn vehicles) around California from February to April 1898. The diarist first journeys along the Pacific coast to Santa Barbara, where he describes the weather and climate, the town, and a visit to a local mission. He takes excursions from Santa Barbara to nearby Montecito, Carpinteria, Ventura, Goleta, and Naples, observing the homes of wealthy Easterners, large grapevines, the oil industry, cattle ranches, and the drought. He then travels to Fresno, where he writes about the city, malaria, heat and drought, water supply, the fruit industry, and a visit to the city's Chinatown. From Fresno, the diarist travels to the Monterey Peninsula via Tracy, Livermore, and San Jose. He describes the weather, land prices, and the towns of Pacific Grove and Monterey, and visits a giant live oak tree. The traveler then moves on to Southern California, stopping in Pasadena and Santa Monica before spending several days in San Diego, where he stays at the Coronado Hotel and writes of the weather, and the houses, streets, and landscape of the city, which he dislikes; he also visits La Jolla and the "Ramona House" adobe (possibly the Casa de Estudillo in San Diego). After a brief side trip to Tijuana, the diarist travels to San Bernadino County and the towns of San Bernadino, Riverside, and Pomona, with an added excursion into the mountains. Entries discuss the area's landscape, citrus groves, and the challenges of the orange industry. He ends his California journey in Los Angeles, leaving on April 8 and arriving in New York 10 days later. Final entries discuss the weather and scenery enroute and include some detailed description of the Colorado Springs area. The Southern Pacific Railroad is mentioned several times in the journal. The diary is in pencil, written in a bound "Memoranda" notebook. Also present is a second, unbound journal by the same author detailing an October 1898 hunting trip, most likely to Maine, which primarily contains descriptions of the weather (17 pages). In addition, there are three unused postcards depicting Los Angeles area real estate subdivisions, the Pacific Grove bathing beach, and the Riverside Salt Lake Railroad viaduct.

Mary Richardson travel diaries

Collection of four diaries kept by Mary Richardson, a cousin of English critic and artist John Ruskin, documenting travel primarily in France and Italy, between 1833 and 1841, with the Ruskin family, including John Ruskin. Richardson often describes the sites they visited, her perceptions, and the daily activities of the family during their tours of Europe. The volumes consist of a diary of travel chiefly in Italy, from May-September 1833 (HM 41910); a diary of travel chiefly in France from June 4-August 25, 1835 (HM 41911); a diary of travel in Rome and Naples from December 22, 1840, to March 11, 1841 (HM 41912); and a diary of travel in Italy from March 14-June 23, 1841 (HM 41913). The collection also contains one additional volume: a diary and appointment book of an unidentified individual, presumably a young man, in London, England, in 1849 (HM 41914).

Glen Canyon rafting trip manuscript

This manuscript, a mimeographed copy, provides a detailed account of a recreational raft trip through Glen Canyon on the Colorado River, in Utah, during the summer of 1958. The anonymous author describes the river, the scenery, the behavior of and interactions of the members of the excursion and their enjoyment of the adventure. There is a full-page map of their route and two pages of illustrations. The last six pages lists the 36 participants of the trip.
