Alice D. Perkins travel scrabooks of trips to Colorado, California and Mexico

Description: The scrapbook covers two trips, by train, that Perkins took with Raymond-Whitcomb, Inc. The first is a trip to Colorado and California in 1882 and the second is a trip to Mexico in 1888. The first excursion made stops at Pueblo and Denver, Colorado; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and Yosemite National Park, California. The second excursion made stops at Chihuahua, Zacatecas, Quéretaro, and Mexico City, Mexico. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, brochures, pamphlets, postcards, as well as a "Pocket Guide to Mexico," and "Brief Guide to Mexico City." There is also a handwritten reminiscence of the excursions written by Perkins' granddaughter in 1920.

Photograph album of automobile road trips across the United States and into Mexico

Visual Materials

An album of 296 snapshot photographs documenting two excursions by automobile across the United States and into Mexico in the late 1930s by a group of young men who appear to have been students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Massachusetts. The first trip, in July and August of 1937, includes numerous scenes in Washington, D.C., Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Mexico, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Utah, Wyoming, and New York. Their travels involved stops at the Tennessee Valley Authority power station at Muscle Shoals, Alabama; Carlsbad Caverns National Park; Grand Canyon National Park; Boulder Dam; Death Valley; Sequoia and Yosemite national parks; Yellowstone National Park; and Niagara Falls. In Mexico, they toured the capital and saw a bullfight. The majority of photographs have handwritten captions in white pencil describing locations. Other images depict collegiate sports, including track and golf, and some mountain climbing. Another western excursion in 1938 includes visits to the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas, Colorado locations, and another visit to Yosemite National Park. The remaining photographs consist of views of the WPI campus, the destructive impact of the 1938 New England hurricane, and stops at unidentified hydroelectric engineering sites.

Czarine Boxall Mexico travel albums

These three albums depict a lengthy excursion taken by Czarine Boxall in 1945 to Mexico City, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tehucacán, Orizaba, Córdoba, Fortín de las Flores, Cuernavaca, Taxco, Morelia, Pátzcuaro, Guadalajara and Mazatlán, as documented by snapshots, captioned postcards and the compiler's own typewritten account, which is bound in with the pages of photographs and snapshots. Each of the three volumes contains extensive commentary about her trip as incorporated by Ms. Boxall on typewritten sheets of paper bound in with the images. The albums are each marked "Mexico" on the front cover.

Myrtle Albright travel diary and scrapbook

Manuscripts

Scrapbook compiled by Myrtle Albright while on her transcontinental railroad trip in the summer of 1920 with her sister Julia. Their journey crossed the central Great Plains, the Southwest, with a visit to a Native American school in New Mexico, and Southern California before continuing to the San Francisco Bay area, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone, Chicago, and back to Durham. The scrapbook contains souvenir postcards and clippings, buttons for "Elliott Tours," excursion tickets and pieces of travel ephemera, and photographs. A detailed account, most likely written by Albright, describes locations visited, the sights seen, and their experiences both on the train and at various destinations. Accompanying the scrapbook is a separate 21 page hand-written account of a 1925 motor tour that describes touring in the vicinity of Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, and describes historic monuments and the weather.

Journal of a trip to California

The journal chronicles a couple's six-month trip from Waukegan, Illinois through Colorado, Utah, and Mexico, to California, August 1920 to February 1921. The entries discuss: train travel, automobile travel, the couple's activities between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Los Angeles, California, visits to Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico, San Diego, Long Beach, Venice, Hollywood, and Pasadena, California (with a visit to Busch Gardens). The journal contains 40 gelatin silver photographs taken during the trip. Following the trip narrative, the journal includes a listing of houses they bought from 1921 to 1926.

George C. Perkins letter to William Logue

Manuscripts

Perkins is ready to accept Logue's proposal "without any more talk" and hopes he "will be more prosperous in the years to come" for his "perseverance deserves to be rewarded." All Logue must do is pay the $500 principal, which Perkins advises him to do.

Photograph album of automobile trips through the West and Mexico

Visual Materials

A photograph album containing 128 photographs documenting two separate excursions by automobile, one undertaken in 1937 and the other in 1939. The first trip appears to have been taken by a family group of five who may have lived in Iowa or Missouri. Their trip photographs are all captioned, and include images of their group and the car, the roads, the sights they visited, and sometimes motels or cabins. They traveled through Texas, New Mexico (including Laguna Pueblo), Arizona, and California, where they visited numerous locations. They are seen at stops in and between Los Angeles and San Francisco, including missions, Hollywood, and three snapshots taken at the Huntington Library. A typed record of the miles traveled, gas used, and cabins they stayed in is pasted to the back of the album. The 1939 trip features mostly photographs of Texas, including parks, landmarks, and visits to friends' houses. They also visited Mexico, including a bullfighting ring, and New Orleans, Louisiana. One photograph of a wooden shack in Arkansas is captioned indicating it is an African American dwelling.
