Lane writes to Joseph Ruckel regarding the acquisition of a patent for Ruckel. However, as Ruckel did not fill out his name properly on land warrant forms, Lane writes "if I do not succeed, you will know the fault is not mine." Includes printed clipping with a biography of Joseph Lane, with the handwritten date "1987."

Letter by Thomson to fellow British physicist Gilbert Stead. The letter reads as follows "Dear Mr. Stead, It was a very great pleasure to me to receive your letter for I remember very well how much I owed to your help during the time I was on the Commission. I hope it will not be long before we meet again. Yours very sincerely, J. J. Thomson." The letter was written in Cambridge.

Letter from Joseph Smith to Oliver Granger written from Nauvoo, Illinois. Smith writes of not receiving Granger's previous letters and that their content may have changed the "proceeding of [the] last Conference." He writes that they thought it "advisable to appoint someone to preside in Kirtland," and asks Granger to join Brother Babbit in the work. Smith asserts his hopes for Granger's welfare and "prosperity for the Saints in Kirtland." He also writes of Granger's securing of the "keys of the Lords House" and that he might pay a visit after the "New York debt is settled." The attribution of the signature to Joseph Smith is questionable, and the letter may have been written by Smith's secretary Robert B. Thompson.

This typewritten letter, written to Professor Paul Hardacre (who taught at Vanderbilt University) is as follows: Dear Professor Hardacre: Many thanks to you for sending me the photograph from The Times. I envy that man lying on the grass in Cornwall, not merely because he is reading Catch-22, but because he appears to be having a much better time doing it than I had all summer traipsing about all through Europe for Holiday magazine, which is why it has taken me so long to acknowledge your kindness in sending me the clipping. Thank you again. Cordially, Joseph Heller [signed]." With the letter is a newspaper clipping of an article entitled "Writing novels slowly but with hardly a catch," about Joseph Heller, from The Times, October 17, 1975.
