The muster rolls, each measuring 53 x 81 cm, were kept when the regiment was stationed on the Texas-Mexico border of the Rio Grande Valley in 1874. The documents record information such as pay, duties, discharges, health, and some genealogical information of troop members.

Homer A. Parmelee diary

In his diary, Homer A. Parmelee writes of his experiences as a Union recruit during the American Civil War. On October 7, 1862, he writes that he has been sworn into Union service. In the next entries, he describes his experiences training in New York, then writes of his traveling by boat to the Mississippi River, where he was stationed at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, taking part in drills and standing watch. He describes his involvement during the siege of Port Hudson, where he was wounded in the arm on May 27, 1863. He was transported to a Baton Rouge hospital, where he writes of his discovery and receiving daily news of the ongoing conflict. He writes of his return to duty several weeks later, and he was pleased to receive his discharge in July 1863. He describes his journey home, where he was part of a group of returning soldiers welcomed by a large crowd. The final entries document Parmelee's ensuing activities, mostly concerned with his doing odd jobs such as building chimneys and plastering, and records of his pay. Also included is a hand-drawn map of an unspecified battle site, and what appears to be a table of locations visited and distances traveled.

M. Brown letter to "My Dear Sir,"

This letter, written from Valparaiso, Chile is dated March 7, 1849. M. Brown wrote it on board the USS Independence to a former shipmate aboard the USS Ohio stationed in San Francisco Bay. In the letter, Brown discusses difficulties in Chile, life aboard Commodore Shubrick's vessel, naval politics and news from the rest of the fleet in the Pacific.

Regimental returns of the 8th Massachusetts Regiment of the Continental Army, with additions and emendations by Gardner Tufts, (bulk 1779-1781)

The regimental returns of the personnel of the 8th Massachusetts regiment kept by Francis Tufts, the adjutant to Colonel Michael Jackson (1734-1801), for the period from 1778 September 3- December 18, when the men were stationed in the Hudson Valley. After the war, Gardner Tufts and possibly other family members (it is written in a variety of hands) filled the added leaves with different material including: a brief narrative of Francis Tufts' military service; copies of orders taken from other regimental order books (including some by George Washington); moral, patriotic and religious essays, reflections, poetry, diagrams, and speeches; and sketches of family homes. Also includes tipped in lithographic portraits of Christopher Columbus, Charles Carroll (last living signer of the Declaration of Independence), George Washington, John Warren (physician and brother of Joseph Warren, hero of Bunker Hill), Marquis de Lafayette, John Adams, Edward Augustus Holyoke (Massachusetts physician and educator), and President William Henry Harrison. Volume also contains several, smaller manuscript items laid in. Front cover is detached; some signs of foxing and water damage.
