H.F. Wickham letter to Warren Kraus

Description: Writing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Wickham describes, "I have been in New Mexico and Arizona since the 15th of April and during this season have put in my Sundays and spare time at collection, with pretty fair success. My captures include over 17000 specimens of Coleoptera from the above named territories. Many of the species are rare and desirable, some of the Meloidae being particularly interesting." Wickham is looking to exchange specimens with Kraus, and promises to give him an "early choice" from his own list.

William Swan letter regarding diabetes treatment

Detailed and informative 1893 letter on the medical and dietary treatment of diabetes at the Carlsbad Spa in Austria-Hungary. The lengthy letter, approximately 1,100 typed words, is addressed to Mrs. L. F. Southwick by William Swan, of Lambertville, New Jersey, himself a previous diabetic patient at Carlsbad. Swan writes at great length about the state-of-the-art medical treatments for diabetes available at Carlsbad, particularly noting the work of Dr. J. Kraus. Kraus was a resident physician at Carlsbad and the author of Carlsbad: Its thermal springs and baths and how to use them (4th ed., 1891). Swan notes the lack of experience of American physicians in treating diabetes and the benefits of going overseas to Carlsbad.

The journal kept by Leonard Henry Lyne, also signed by Capt. Francis Hoyt Gregory. Detailed daily entries record daily events, orders, events on board, rations, enforcing the naval blockade, prizes captures, encounters with foreign vessels, etc. The journal covers the Raritan's South America cruise ( from August 22, 1844 to March 1846) and its subsequent service in the Mexican War as part of the Home Squadron's blockade of the east coast of Mexico and then, jointly with the U.S.S. Potomac, reinforcing the military depot at Point Isabel from May to September 1846.

James Warren letter to Edwin Hunt Frost

James Warren writes of his life experiences, such as crossing the Atlantic Ocean, riding the first railroad, and owning railroad stock. He bemoans the "wretched, unfortunate Strikes that has so much deranged all Business and Prosperity." He also writes of the newspaper industry, in particular the San Francisco-based California Farmer, and lists items of historical interest in its offices in great detail. He tells Frost, "If we don't surprise & astonish you by the Magnitude, the Rarity, the Intrinsic Value of our collection - we will pay you the cost of your Trip!" It appears Frost is a prospective buyer. Signed "Col. Warren."

This collection includes correspondence relating to AAA affairs, sympathy letters following Batchelder's death, photographs of Batchelder and AAA executives, and clippings from periodicals. In regards to the rivalry between AAA and Automobile Club of America (ACA) in 1908, William H. Hotchkiss writes to Batchelder, "A plain statement just now is in my judgment highly desirable particularly as I feel certain that before the year is past, the A.C.A. will have surrendered its foreign treaties and again become a member of the A.A.A." (June 23, 1908).

Samuel Hopkins Willey letter to Miss Lord

Letter from Samuel Hopkins Willey to a Miss Lord, sent from San Francisco. In the hastily written letter Willey writes that he has put up "articles of my soliciting" and that he has mislaid a prospectus and would like to be sent another copy. He also writes that "it is very hard for me in the press of care to do work for this school."

Captain John H. Roberts letter to S.D. Saulisburry

Manuscripts

This letter by Roberts is addressed to S.D. Saulisburry (a misspelling of S.D. Saulisbury, who served on the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors from 1893 to 1897). In this letter he asks about possible forest fires in the area as well as the classification of a "Grand Victory Rock" and various specimens of unidentified material.
