The collection is single-item cataloged and contains 759 items including 92 manuscripts. Most of the manuscripts are documents regarding the advertising, circulation, and financial concerns of The Los Angeles record, The San Diego sun, and The San Francisco daily news from the early 1910s. The other substantial manuscripts are diaries of Adaline Rhoads and Roscoe Maxwell Rhoads detailing the social life and customs of late-19th century Indiana and early-20th century Southern California. Adaline Rhoads wrote about her daily chores, the activities of her children and her travels. Roscoe Maxwell Rhoads also details his attempts to mend his health through exercise, various diets, bathing in magnetic wells and two visits to the Battle Creek Sanitarium in the late 1890s. Roscoe Maxwell Rhoads also detailed the family's journey from Anderson, Indiana to San Diego, California and their later move to La Jolla, California. The collection contains 102 pieces of correspondence, the majority of which are addressed to Horace Emerson Rhoads regarding the newspaper business. There are also a significant number of letters from Horace Emerson Rhoads regarding the newspaper business and the San Diego Athletic Club. There are letters concerning San Diego and California politics, including three letters regarding the purchase of an airplane for the governor of California. Rhoads received letters on the subject of honorary membership in the Los Angeles Record Newsboys' Club. The collection also contains letters regarding participation in La Jolla events and politics.

The collection consists of a series of diaries (37 volumes, 1900-1938) and 8 photograph albums (approximately 1862-1919) related to Selena Gray Galt Ingram. (There are no diaries for 1934 or 1937.) The diaries reflect the social life and customs of the Los Angeles area, 1902-1938, including descriptions of the Banning family, the Patton family, Santa Catalina Island, and ranch life in Imperial Valley. There are also passing references to the Southern Pacific Railroad Company and the Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railroad Company. Some diaries also document the few years Ingram spent in St. Albans, Vermont; Empalme, Mexico; and Berkeley, Mill Valley, San Francisco, and San Rafael, California. The photograph albums depict many of the same people and places listed above, as well as some photographs of Yosemite, 1903. An album dating from 1908-1914 contains many images of Imperial Valley and the Ingram ranch near Holtville, California. Some of the diaries also contain photographs, including George S. Patton Sr., George S. Patton Jr., the Patton home, and other family (1911 diary), and a photograph of Captain William Banning (1913 diary).

This collection contains the professional papers of American landscape architect Florence Yoch (1890-1972) relating to her work designing landscapes and gardens primarily in Southern California, but also in Northern California, Mexico, and other locales, chiefly with her partner Lucile Council (1898-1964) and their firm Yoch and Council. The collection includes approximately 2700 photographs; approximately 250 drawings and renderings, including 163 rolled drawings; approximately 600 postcards; office records; travel journals; research materials; writings; and artifacts. The materials date from 1869 to 2013, with the bulk of the collection relating to Yoch's work from 1918 until shortly before her death and representing 100 of her over 250 projects. The collection also includes research and administrative files of James J. Yoch, Florence Yoch's cousin, comprising photographs, approximately 2500 slides, notes, articles, bibliographies, correspondence, and publicity materials for his book, Landscaping the American Dream: The Gardens and Film Sets of Florence Yoch, 1890-1972 (Harry N. Abrams, Inc./Sagapress, Inc., New York, 1989) and for the exhibition he curated with Eric T. Haskell of Scripps College, "Personal Edens: The Gardens and Film Sets of Florence Yoch," which opened at the Huntington Library in 1992 before traveling to other locations.

Helen Kern Grills photograph album and diary

A memory book kept by Helen Kern Grills during her trip west with her family beginning in May 1925 from her home in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to the West Coast, and ending back in Marion, Ohio. The album has a combination of 291 labeled photos and post cards and 45 typed pages of a diary of her trip. Also included are a Band program dated June 5, 1925 from Long Beach, CA; a movie house program dated June 20, 1925 from Long Beach, CA; a map of southern California; the June 25, 1925 Mount Lowe Daily News along with the history of Mt. Lowe Railway. There is a San Diego and Coronado Ferry Ticket and brochure on Yosemite National Park; a map of Yellowstone National Park and three Yellowstone National Park geyser schedules. There are also a substantial number of photographs and descriptions of Missions in California as well as Long Beach, California. The roughly three month trip was accomplished through the use of trains, cars, boats, horses and buses.
