Notes taken by an American student on Ferdinand Jacob Redtenbacher's lectures on construction of machinery

    Manuscripts

Two manuscript volumes of lecture notes written by an unidentified American student (possibly with the initials "C.H."); written in a legible hand with numerous diagrams and illustrations in the text. The lectures were held at the Polytechnikum Karlsruhe in Germany (now the Technische Hochschule Karlsruhe). Volume 1, dated 1861-1864, contains lecture notes on the construction of machinery and is followed by the printed text of Tafeln zu Dr. Redtenbacher's Vortragen uber Maschinenbau in 13 nach dem Vortrag folgenden Lieferungen, 1862. Volume 2, dated 1862-1863, contains notes from the lectures of Reinhard Baumeister, Franz Keller and Hermann Sternberg; the lectures cover such subjects as bridges, cofferdams, practical arched construction, the Mt. Cenis tunnel, water works, and the process of tendering. Both volumes are damaged, with missing spines, though a portion of the spine from Volume 2 has been preserved.

    Fishkill Landing Machine Company ledgers

    Manuscripts

Two autograph ledgers belonging to John Van Tine and John H. Van Tine, machinists at the Fishkill Landing Machine Company. Volume 1, dated 1853-1909, is labeled: "Record of Steam Engines Built By the Fishkill Landing Machine Co." The volume contains information regarding the year of sale of engines, sold to which company, type of engine, etc. Volume 2, dated 1886-1894, contains autograph drawings, illustrations and notes by John Van Tine, whose name is written on the inside front cover, relating to the parts and installation of various engines for various buyers. Both volumes have loose spines and the pages show some wear and staining from being used as reference books for the machinists. Also enclosed are three pieces of ephemera: a printed letterhead with autograph notes on the verso, a typewritten letter with envelope addressed to George B. Van Tine, Jan. 2, 1940 and a typewritten "List of 16 x 36 Fishkill Engines as listed in small black books over desk," Jan. 6, 1940.

    Recipe miscellany

    Manuscripts

A collection of remedies, culinary and household recipes, this manuscript volume appears to be a fair copy with later annotations in the hand of Mrs. Holmes (whose name appears on the upper pastedown), dating from the last half of the nineteenth century. The recipes in the volume range from suckling pig and marmalade to furniture oil and the remedies include how to bleach freckles and make a gargle for a sore throat. Also enclosed is a manuscript originally laid into the volume and now placed in a mylar sleeve; it is a recipe for pomatora, from approximately 1675-1725, and on the verso is an autograph note addressed to "Mrs Jobber."
