    Collection of diaries, scrapbooks, and family histories kept by Leo Newmark and Harris Newmark between the 1880s and 1938, as well as an unidentified German diary kept in 1850. Individual items include the manuscript of Leo Newmark's California family Newmark: an intimate history (c.1970), which traces Newmark's father J.P. Newmark and other family members from their origins in Prussia to their arrival in Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as being an autobiographical history of Newmark's youth. There are also four diaries kept by Leo Newmark, including his 1900 account of his travels in Europe (including Gibraltar, Naples, Rome, Venice, Zurich, Strasburg, Berlin, Copenhagen, and London) and a 1912-1931 diary which includes references to Newmark's travels from London to New York aboard the Laconia, his impressions of World War I and the Russian Revolution (includes the remarks "I didn't see any reason to object to the sinking of the Lusitania," "War was declared about a week ago but except for the newspapers there is no visible sign of warlike proceedings," and "Russia's revolution gives the Allies and Americans a fine opportunity to orate about 'making the world safe for Democracy' . . . [but] for us Jews there are many pros and cons"), and to the Graf Zeppelin's arrival in San Francisco in August 1929. Newmark's diaries include frequent references to his scholarly activities and are written in English, German, French, Ethiopic, and Arabic. Also included is Newmark's book of "Random Recollections" (1927), which recalls his meetings with Ambrose Bierce, Louis Pasteur, Jacques Loeb, Walther Rathenau, Franklin K. Lane, and Baron Lister; Newmark's scrapbook, which includes newspaper clippings and obituaries relating to his family members and acquaintances; and Harris Newmark's 1883-1908 scrapbook, which includes clippings, notes, letters, photographs, and ephemera relating to the Newmark and Loeb families.

    Receipt for Benjamin Davis Wilson

    Manuscripts

    The receipt to B. D. Wilson is for "Sixty two 30/100 Dollars" which was "interest for the month of September on a certain promise note of twenty five hundred dollars." It is signed "J. P. Newmark per Harris Newmark." It is dated 1855, October 1 and was written in Los Angeles.

    The collection consists of photographs, many of which were used as illustrations in Harris Newmark's memoir, "Sixty Years in Southern California." The photographs include the Gerlemann Grocery Store (located at 811-813 Central Ave.) and H. Newmark & Co. (housed in the Arcadia Block), and the La Fiesta de Los Angeles parade. The collection also includes many portraits, including those of Dr. Griffin, Isaias W. Hellman, Col. James G. Howard, Don Antonio Coronel, Charles L. Ducommun, Juan Lanfranco, Homer Lea, C.E. Thom, and William Workman. A number of the photographs have C.C. Pierce's stamp on the verso.

    Joshua Dean Simkins notebook and scrapbook

    The notebook contains handwritten notes by Simkins regarding his childhood and his teaching career; it also contains clippings of articles by and about Simkins as well as an address he gave before the Central Ohio Teachers' Association in 1909. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings of the notes Simkins took while on a railroad trip from Centerburg, Ohio to San Francisco, California to attend a meeting of the National Teachers' Association in the summer of 1888. He details his journey including his fellow passengers, sights seen (including a hike to Pike's Peak), his stays in Salt Lake City, Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sante Fe; he gives few details regarding the meeting including that there were roughly 10,000 participants. These notes were published in the Centerburg Agitator.

    J. Morris Slemons scrapbooks

    These scrapbooks, kept by J. Morris Slemon's contains various material related to his career, especially his publications regarding the field of obstetrics and its history. The first scrapbook contains materials related to J. Morris Slemons's biography of John Whitridge Williams, early 20th century authority on maternity, chief obstetrician of Johns Hopkins Hospital and a former dean of the Johns Hopkins Medical School. The scrapbook contains letters from famous physicians around the United States congratulating the author on his success and commenting on the subject. There are also a few materials related to Slemons's career and other publications. The volume includes eight loose items: one review of the book; one photo; two letters of congratulations; one library card from Los Angeles County Medical Association Library; and three fliers for ordering the book. The second scrapbook contains material related to J. Morris Slemons's interest in maternity and obstetrics and his book The prospective mother. There are newspaper and journal clippings regarding medical anecdotes, mostly regarding maternity and the practice of obstetrics. The scrapbook also contains book reviews of medical works on obstetrics and maternity, including those for his book. A few clippings are in German. He also collected letters written to him regarding his book as well as obituaries of local doctors. The volume includes sixteen loose items including: an airplane ticket to Mexico City; two sets of notes, one of which may be by John Whitridge Williams on obstetrics in the Bible; three clippings; eight letters, one regarding his resignation from a Red Cross Committee, six pertaining to his book, and another pertaining to his essay on book collecting; and two essays, one on book collecting and one on Williams' work.

    Charles Lacroix Pascal scrapbook

    Manuscripts

    This scrapbook contains letters, with a few documents. Many of the letters have been mounted for scrapbooks, and some include photographs or etchings of their authors. Also included in the album are newspaper clippings, etchings, and copies of letters of prominent Civil War generals. Additional photographs acquired with the collection have been transferred to the portrait collection in the Library's Rare Book Department.
