    Widney family papers

    The collection of 45 items consists primarily of diaries, reminiscences and legal documents that relate to Widney family history and the history of Los Angeles and its environs during the last quarter of the 19th century. Subjects include: Widney-Workman family history, the Mormons in Illinois, an overland journey to California in 1856 (recorded in a journal kept by Sarah Johnston Barnes), the anti-Chinese riot of November 1871 in Los Angeles, and education and religion in late 19th century Los Angeles. There is also a typescript copy of Boyle Workman's book, The City that Grew, which traces the history of Los Angeles from the time of the Workman-Rowland party to 1935; additionally, there is a scrapbook of newspaper clippings related to the book. Persons represented in the collection include Sarah Johnston Barnes, Robert Maclay Widney, Mary Barnes Widney, Martha Frances Widney Workman, and Boyle Workman.

    Rare Books

    This scrapbook chiefly contains newspaper clippings related to the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia. Most of the clippings appear to have been collected by a clipping service and consist mainly of British newspaper from June 1961 to February 1962. Album has black covers and green spine; without bookplate. Compiler unknown.

    William P. Fuller scrapbook

    A scrapbook kept by William P. Fuller of letters, photographs, and newspaper clippings covering the years 1863-1899. The autograph letters are by G.T. Beauregard (April 20, 1886), John G. Nicolay (April 18, 1887), Lydia Howard Sigourney (March 14, 1863), Mark Twain (January 23, 1869), Charles D. Warner (May 12, 1887), and John L. Worden (May 16, 1887). The photographs include, among others, the conjoined twins Chang and Eng Bunker, known as the "Siamese twins," Mr. & Mrs. General Tom Thumb, and Edgar Allan Poe (none of the photographs are dated). The newspaper clippings include poems and various articles but the majority of the clippings are newspaper columns written by William P. Fuller. Included are columns about Abraham Lincoln (no date), Andersonville prison (October 19, 1880), and Lewis G. Clarke (no date); there is also a long series of columns from August 1883 about a journey west Fuller took that included Missouri, Yellowstone, Oregon and Washington. The scrapbook was disbound by the Huntington Conservation department in 2019 and each page, some with inserted pieces, was placed in individual folders; the original covers were retained and the material is in fair condition though some pages are brittle and darkened due to age and glue.

    A scrapbook of newspaper and magazine clippings of Hollywood movies, actors, and actresses; it also contains Christopher Isherwood's autograph notes and reviews of the movies included in the scrapbook.

    HM 81598 (1-3): Scrapbook related to Carl E. McStay and the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce good will tour to the "Orient." The tour included: Hawaii, Japan, and China. Laid in the scrapbook are photographs, clippings, and postcards with captions. There appears to be a smaller scrapbook that is no longer bound. These pages are now contained in two folders.

    Leo Newmark scrapbook

    One scrapbook believed to be kept by Leo Newmark between 1912 and 1942. It includes newspaper clippings (and a few other printed items) from various newspapers (both American and Foreign) and dealing with multiple subjects including: the Newmark family, "Emperor Norton" of San Francisco, obituaries of notable individuals, and local San Francisco and Los Angeles news and history. There are a few items in German and some of the clippings deal with the Jews, World War II, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter-Partei propaganda, Adolf Hitler, and Joseph Goebbels. On page 14 is an item from a German newspaper urging the German people to not frequent stores owned by Jews. The scrapbook contains an index at the end.
