"The Brazilian epic poem 'O Uraguai,' first published in Lisbon in 1769, caught the imagination of Sir Richard F. Burton during his service as Her Majesty's consul in Santos between 1865 and 1868. The great translator of the 'Arabian Nights' and of Camoen's 'Lusiads' saw in this poem a tragic depiction of the theme of cultural conflict so prominent in his own work. Burton's verse translation, both a faithful rendering of the original and a worthy achievement in its own right, is still the sole English version. This edition finally brings the translation to light...This edition is based on the manuscript now in the Huntington Library. It includes the translator's preface, his biography of Gama, and his critical analysis of the poem, along with the original Portuguese text. The Prologue and Epilogue are two separate manuscripts, in different hands, still attached after removal from volume. A Prologue begins: "Tis not five yeares since this was a Sweete Place..." (2 p.); the Epilogue begins: "Our theatre alas is quite undone..." (2 p.). The manuscripts were removed from Bridgewater pamphlet volume 2/G 16 (HEH 133562-90) which was broken up for the removal of duplicates.

Manuscript on vellum scroll, in Hebrew (mssHM 40697), 5.5 x 120 inches; "Hamelech mesillah" mounted on a brass crown (Keter Torah). At the end of the scroll written in Russian: "In the name of God. Help. Quickly. Andre." Also enclosed with the scroll: a translation of this Russian note, sent in an envelope from California Institute of Technology, August 19, 1946.

John Burroughs letter to "Miss White" and poem

John Burroughs wrote this letter to "Miss White" from his home in West Park, New York, talking about his poem "Waiting" (written in 1862). He explains that the poem reflected his future philosophy of life. Accompanying the letter is a handwritten copy of the poem in Burroughs' hand. Both items are glued on album pages.
