Frances Irvine journal

Daily journal of Frances Anita Irvine, kept in 1894 while she was living in both San Francisco and on the Irvine Ranch. Frances' entries include notes on the purchase of a new buggy, quail and duck hunting, shipping oranges, growing pumpkins,selling cattle,traveling from San Francisco to Ranch, cleaning the Irvine Ranch house and repairing the tennis courts, and Frances' illnesses. Also includes references to various family members and acquaintances, including Madame Modjeska and her husband Bozenta Chlapowski, actress Adelaide Keim, Capt. Healey (possibly Captain Michael Healy), Judge Richard Eagan, Judge Wilde, Josephine Blair, Sidney Knoper, George Irvine, members of the Plum family, and Christian Krause, among others. The journal also contains a recipe for homemade cough medicine made from laudanum.

William Burchell papers, (bulk 1805-1812)

This small group of material consists of eight letters to and from William Burchell regarding his finances, Naval commissions, and the ships Orion and Saturn. British Royal Navy officer Lord Amelius Beauclerk is an addressee of one of the letters and a subject of several other letters. Also included are charts (call and compass signals) for the Royal Navy's Scheldt Fleet, Channel Fleet, Baltick [sic] Fleet, and the Cadiz Fleet; four commissions of Burchell (1809-1812); and two signal books kept by Burchell. There is also a memo by Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm regarding parole and countersign terms. There are also notes on British Navy signals that are from the early 20th century (author unknown).

Pocket diary of Thomas D. Evans

Complete diary for the year 1864. The daily entries describe Evans' duties filing provision returns, drawing rations, supplies, and ammunitions, etc., gives accounts of camp life, the wounded and fallen in battles, Confederate prisoners, deserters, and guerillas, military operations, news (including a note about Santiago fire of Dec. 1863), and the recruitment in Pittsburgh, and follows Franz Siegel and David Hunter in Shenandoah Valley in the spring and summer of 1864. The accounts of the hospitals are rather sketchy, on the account of his wounded arm; Evans did mention a Christmas dinner and concert organized by Sanitary and Christian Commissions.
