Description: This small group of material consists of eight letters to and from William Burchell regarding his finances, Naval commissions, and the ships Orion and Saturn. British Royal Navy officer Lord Amelius Beauclerk is an addressee of one of the letters and a subject of several other letters. Also included are charts (call and compass signals) for the Royal Navy's Scheldt Fleet, Channel Fleet, Baltick [sic] Fleet, and the Cadiz Fleet; four commissions of Burchell (1809-1812); and two signal books kept by Burchell. There is also a memo by Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm regarding parole and countersign terms. There are also notes on British Navy signals that are from the early 20th century (author unknown).

This small collection consist of six letters from Captain Paterson to his uncle Charles William Tonyn (died 1805, rector of Radnage in Buckinghamshire) and to his grandmother, written chiefly from the Mediterranean fromn 1793 to 1794, mentioning in passing the French Royalist uprising at Toulon in November 1793, Sir william Sidney Smith's attack on the French naval fleet and arsenal in the Inner Harbor at Toulon, and Paterson's own concerns for his family, patronage, and promotion, and the Navy Board's various letters to Paterson concerning the personnel, supplies, and refitting of the ship Admiral de Vries at Chatham Yard in 1798. Other than a brief testimonial and a list of his promotions, there is virtually nothing about Paterson's earlier service in North America or his activities during the remainder of the Napoleonic Wars.

William Eve papers, (bulk 1880-1891)

This small group of items consists of letters, sketches, photographs, a photograph album and ephemera (and are arranged in that manner, then chronologically). The majority of these items deal with Eve's railroad trip from New York to Salt Lake City and his time in Salt Lake City, Ibapah, and Gold Hill, Tooele County, Utah as well as Soda Springs, Idaho. In Eve's letters, which are written to his parents, he details his trip West including a tragic collision with a wagon that killed men and horses, the scenery he passes, and his arrival in Salt Lake City. He also talks about mining, sheep herding, farming, seeing the boxer Jim Corbett fight, the Blackfeet (Siksika) Indians and life in the West. Throughout all of his letters, which he is writing to entice his family to also come to America, Eve compares America and its people to England and its people. His sketches include things he sees in the West such as several American Indians, a miner's drill, a coyote, scorpion, and a locust. One of his letters contains a small panorama drawing of Gold Hill, Utah. The collection contains several notes and sketches from Eve's time in London. There are also three letters to William Eve by his sister Elizabeth Eve; these are written from New York City in the early 20th century. The photographs are of Eve family members around the turn of the century. The photograph album contains photographs from a flood in Salt Lake City in 1926 and some pictures of the family camping. The ephemera is a 1959 issue of the Utah American Legion's publication "Utah Legionnaire."
