    Francis Russell, Duke of Bedford, account book

    A manuscript volume containing the current accounts for Francis Russell, 7th Duke of Bedford, covering the years 1850 January 1-1858 December 31, with his bank Child & Co., London, England. The volume is divided into incoming funds on versos and sums paid on rectos and in some cases very large sums of money are recorded (£ 259,431); entries include, for example, income from Covent Garden Market and payments for kitchen gardens. The entries provide insights into the life of one of England's highest ranked peers. The volume is in very good condition, with contemporary vellum covers; the pages are ruled in red with entries mainly in one hand. The covers contain the title: "His Grace / the Duke of Bedford / Current Account / From 1st Jany / To 31st Decr 1858."

    Medical account book

    This account book includes patient names and fees paid for medical treatment from 1851 to 1881. The author is unknown but might be in Ohio. There is some mention of the treatment performed and reason for visit such as: childbirth, prescriptions of medicine, treatment of wounds, and even some dental work. There are 23 pages of newspaper clippings from newspapers in Ohio (the clippings are sometimes glued over the medical information). The clippings include poems and short articles, many of which are written by Thomas C. Harbaugh, a writer from Ohio. The clippings are from 1895 to 1897. Several pages have been cut-out of the volume.

    An account book kept by Zachariah T. Shugart between 1838 and 1854, which includes ten pages of listings of enslaved people, referred to on page 96 as "Runaway Negroes," whom he and his associate Stephen Bogue helped transport to freedom after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850. The book also contains records of Shugart's income and expenses, including those covering his boarding house which served as an Underground Railroad station.

    Double-column account book of an unidentified merchant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, possibly Richard Footman and Peter Footman. The first page has two contra entries for February 1-2,1756, followed by consistent cash and contra entries from June 1, 1759, to July 31, 1768, on the subsequent pages. Includes a June 11, 1763, entry to "Franklin & Hall in full for Advertisements & the Gazette to 4 March last" (folio 37), as well as an entry for Benjamin Franklin (1764 January 17, folio 41), and David Hall (folios 57, 90). The names of Richard Footman and Peter Footman appear in multiple entries throughout the volume.
