    Patagonia revisited

    Rare Books

"Since its discovery by Magellan in 1520, Patagonia has retained its fascination as a metaphor for The Ultimate. Here Bruce Chatwin and Paul Theroux join forces in a literary quest for some of the instances in which these 'final capes of exile' have affected the literary imagination. This lively and delightful curio had its origins in an entertainment the two writers gave for The Royal Geographical Society, at a time when Paul Theroux was following Bruce Chatwin's 'In Patagonia' with 'The Old Patagonian Express'"--Publisher's description, jacket flap.

William N. (William Nicholson) Jeffers letter to Richard H. Kern

    Manuscripts

Jeffers writes of a commodore who wishes to hire an artist for sketching an upcoming expedition to the West. However, there are insufficient funds available, and the resulting sketches could not be kept for private use, for they will be sent to the government. Jeffers writes, "I hope your love of adventure will induce you to accept." Apparently, Richard Kern then forwarded this letter to his brother Edward, along with a short note, to see if Edward might be interested in the opportunity.

William H. Anderson letter to Frances Anderson

    Manuscripts

Letter from William H. Anderson to his daughter Frances, written from the "southern part" of New Mexico near Rincon. In the letter Anderson describes his travels from Boston to New Mexico by railroad. The letter was intended as a geography lesson for his daughter and Anderson carefully traces his progress through Buffalo, Detroit, down the Mississippi River to St. Louis, through Missouri and Kansas, and finally through Colorado to New Mexico. Anderson includes a slightly more detailed description of Kansas City, Missouri, where he rode in a cable street car. In addition to tracking his geographical progress Anderson writes of difficulties encountered with cattle on the railroad tracks.
