Description: Binder assembeld from motions notebook compiled by Judge David A. Thomas at the time he was Supervising Judge of Law and Motions, Los Angeles County Superior Court. This copy was assembled for Judge Christian E. Markey, Jr. in 1975. The volume, which dates c.1970-1975, includes photocopies of articles, motions, filings, and memorandums. The majority of the material focuses on past judgements and appears to be intended as a reference volume for preparing future cases.

Jonathan Bliss notebook

This notebook contains Jonathan Bliss's notes on medical practice; the notebook was kept by Bliss in 1723 and 1724. The volume contains excerpts from the following prominent 17th and 18th century medical texts: Giorgio Baglivi's, The practice of physick; Ysbrand van Diemerbroeck's Anatome corporis humani; and Thomas Fuller's Pharmacopoeia extemporanea among others. The excerpts teach the medical theory of humorism, and occasionally include direct quotes from Hippocrates and Galen. They also describe numerous common medical problems and diseases from apoplexy and cancer to toothache and wounds, and also include treatments. The treatments usually include instructions for preparing herbal or other compounds as prescriptions, naming many ingredients from mercury to spearmint to vinegar. Often the excerpts feature "clinical" case studies of a patient with the relevant problem, and testify to the effects of the recommended treatments. It is believed Bliss lived in the United States at the time he kept the notebook; perhaps Massachusetts.

Notebooks on Plants and Planting

Visual Materials

Four notebooks containing articles and clippings, handwritten and typed notes, plant lists, and other information on plants and planting; titles are from spines or were devised by cataloger. Some of the material from the notebooks was found missing. Notebooks include: Bulbs - Cosper and Lime (approximately 1936), a 3-ring binder referencing Cosper, a horticultural consultant and soil analyst who co-wrote a book, Gardens for Victory, about victory gardens with Jean-Marie Putnam in 1942. Planting instructions and notes on Lloyd Cosper (approximately 1962, title devised), a 3-ring binder containing directions concerning various plant varieties, pest and other treatment instructions, and troubleshooting; includes "Directions for Red Aggregate Paving for Mrs. Hancock Banning Cottage at Laguna." Check List of local flora, Los Angeles (undated), an 18-page typed list of plants in alphabetical order by plant name; names are in Latin. Miscellaneous (approximately 1936; title on spine: "Misc."), a 3-ring binder containing articles on floral decoration and on various geographic areas, including Florida and the Colorado Rockies in the United States, Mexico, and New Zealand.

A botanical album created by Lady Elizabeth Parker Fane; she started painting the illustrations in this album in 1765 which means she was just 14 years old when she began. Flower painting had become a fashionable occupation for the wives and daughters of the great houses of England and Elizabeth Parker Fane achieved exceptional ability under the tutelage of Georg Ehret. The album contains 25 watercolor and gouache paintings on parchment; depicted are both sides of the plant's leaves and also shown are more than one reproductive stage for each specimen: with the early formation of the blossom, the growing petals, and the full expression of the flower. The images in the album depict numerous plant specimens, sometimes with butterflies and other insects, most likely local to the Macclesfield estate, Shirburn Castle, in Oxfordshire. Only a small number of the paintings contain titles, though a few are dated by the artist. The 25 paintings are laid into the volume and the remaining pages are blank. The album is bound in a contemporary, richly gilt morocco wallet binding, with a green silk chemise to wrap top and lower edges; the binding was done by an unidentified binder. The album has a lock and key fastening, though the lock has been deactivated, the key is kept with the companion volume mssHM 84100.

The notebook contains David Cox's notes regarding his medical education and his experiences under the tutelage of Dr. Walter Buell. Along with medical notes, Cox records his thoughts, the weather, his travels, and poetry. There is also a note with a short history of Cox's family.

The science of soap: notebook

Manuscripts

Florilegium dated April 17, 1899-April 4, 1903 pertaining to the science of soapmaking, composed of both hand-inscribed material and clippings from various periodicals. In addition to such articles as "The Specific Heat of Glycerin Waste Lyes and Crude Glycerin," the volume contains an advertisement for a patented soap frame, chemical analysis of various soap-related commercial products, information on running a boiler room efficiently, and statistics regarding the fat yield of a steer; also present are occasional motivational pieces entirely unrelated to soap. The unknown author lived in the Northeast US, and was probably a student.
