    Sarah Siddons letter to Rev. Mr. Dennison and engravings

    Volume containing an undated two-page letter to Rev. Mr. Dennison of Norwich, England, circa 1788, sent by Siddons' following her return to her Gower Street residence in London. The letter is preceded by eight engraved portraits of Siddons and followed by a typescript transcript of the letter and biographical sketch of Siddons. The portraits consist of "Mrs. Siddons. After the Picture by Sir Joshua Reynolds," engraved by W. Holl; Mrs. Siddons from a drawing by Downman; "Mrs. Siddons as the Tragic Muse," by Joshua Reynolds, engraved by John Bromley, and published by Moon, Boys & Graves, July 2, 1832; "Mrs. Siddons as Euphrasia ... The Grecian Daughter," by DeWilde and Conde, printed for J. Bell, 1792; "Mrs. Siddons as Jane Shore," by Hamilton and Leney, published by J. Bell, 1791; "Mrs. Siddons as Lady MacBeth," engraved by J. Rogers, published by G. Virtue, 1825; and "Mrs. Siddons as Medea" engraved by Thornthwaite.

    De Montfort : a tragedy

    Handwritten copy of a revision of Joanna Baillie's play "De Montfort," by Thomas Campbell, with extensive annotations of notes and corrections in the hand of Sarah Siddons. Laid in the front is a proof portrait of Siddons by S. Arlent Edwards, signed by the artist in pencil.

    Joseph Campbell letter to "Dear Mr. Griffis,"

    This letter is chiefly about the Irish writer Joseph Campbell (1879-1944). Campbell does talk a little about some of his own publications and writing. Mr. Griffis had gotten the two authors confused. The letter was written in New York City.

    Surgical notes: notebook

    Manuscripts

    This notebook contains handwritten surgical notes (30 pages) by a Dr. Carmen (first name is unknown), probably in California. The notes are undated but the approximate date is 1856. The subjects vary and include: colds, burns, blood vessels, aneurysms, small pox, cancer and many others. There are also a few pages of "General Remarks." The volume also contains a 12-page index near the back of the notebook. Most of the volume is blank. On the inside front cover is a note about the provenance of the notebook.

    Motions notebook assembled for Judge Christian E. Markey, Jr

    Manuscripts

    Binder assembeld from motions notebook compiled by Judge David A. Thomas at the time he was Supervising Judge of Law and Motions, Los Angeles County Superior Court. This copy was assembled for Judge Christian E. Markey, Jr. in 1975. The volume, which dates c.1970-1975, includes photocopies of articles, motions, filings, and memorandums. The majority of the material focuses on past judgements and appears to be intended as a reference volume for preparing future cases.

    Richard Bentley notebook

    It is conjecture that the author of this notebook is Richard Bentley ("R. Bentley" appears on the verso of the second flyleaf). The volume includes several essays including "Sanderson's Hydrostaticks," "De Microscopiis," "De Telescopiis," and "Demonstrations of the 6th Axiom in Dr. Isaak Newton's Opticks." There are also 8 pages of notes regarding mathematics.
