    Russell, Majors and Waddell records, (bulk 1838-1868)

    Manuscripts

    A collection of 508 items from 1838 to 1903, it consists of the business and legal records of Russell, Majors and Waddell. It includes material about freighting operations, the mercantile business, land transactions in Kansas and Missouri, and the Pony Express. The company also hauled supplies for the U. S. Army during the 1857 to 1858 Utah Expedition (Utah War). The material consists of business papers, documents, correspondence (both business and personal), bills, receipts and ephemera. Persons represented in the collection include: Robert B. Bradford, Charles Byers, Alexander Majors, William Hepburn Russell, John W. Waddell, Robert Fielding Waddell, and William Bradford Waddell.

    James Graham Fair letter to George D. Robert

    Manuscripts

    Letter from James Graham Fair to George D. Roberts, sent from Virginia City, Nevada. Fair writes of a "sprinkling" project undertaken by a Mr. Taylor in Silver City. Fair had lately been involved in a suit brought by a Mr. Waddell, who performed the project, against the Devil's Gate Toll Road Company for unpaid wages. Fair writes that Waddell won the case but that Taylor did not attend, and that if he were to attend the subsequent trial "I can defeat the plaintiff in an hour."

    Jacob Sturn memoir and related material

    Manuscripts

    The memoir, which was written in 1945, covers Jacob Sturn's life from his childhood in Austria to his death in California. Joseph M. Sturn discusses in detail his father's experiences as an immigrant in New York City; a coal miner in Davenport, Iowa; a miner in Colorado and Virginia City, Montana (where he joined a vigilance committee); on the Oregon Trail with Russell, Majors & Waddell; in Kansas during the dispute over its statehood; and wheat farming in Rice County, Kansas. Included with the memoir are Jacob Sturn's naturalization records from Iowa and Kansas, which were issued to him in 1856, 1858, and 1860, as well as letters by Joseph M. Sturn, Jr., requesting copies of those records
