    In this 3-page letter, Hummel describes his overland journey to California from Illnois. He talks about arriving in Fort Laramie and describes in detail the bad weather he encountered, the deaths of mules, cattle and horses along the way, and the physical landscape of the desert and the Sierra Nevadas. He also talks about his life in Sacramento, the gold he has found at Sutter's Mill and the difficulty of gold mining. Hummel gives prices for items and suggests that his wife and children come to California to be with him and states that they "could get rich in 2 years time." The letters is on letterhead from "J. M. Hummel Wholesale and Retail" in Sandwich, Illinois.

    Ernest Clarke letter to "Dear Folks,"

    Manuscripts

    In this letter to friends, Ernest Clarke describes his stay at the hotel on Mount Wilson. He talks about the scenery, the animals he encounters along the hiking trails, the flora and fauna, the surrounding areas, and the observatory, its funding and the building of a road to get construction materials up the mountain. The letter is written on "Mt. Wilson" letterhead with an image of the hotel.

    Lionel Allen Sheldon letter to "Dear Nelson,"

    In this 2-page handwritten letter, L. A. Sheldon is asking his friend "Nelson" to help solve a problem with a missing benefit certificate and non-payment of a claim. In the letter he states that the First National Bank of Pasadena will pay on the condition that the certificate is surrendered to them. The letter is written on letterhead of "Offices of Redondo Beach Co." which has a small map of southern California showing Redondo Beach, Los Angeles and other cities. The letter includes a list of the directors of the company including Charles Silent, one of the founders of the city of Redondo Beach.
