Maria Fitzherbert letter to William Porden

An autograph, signed letter addressed to "Sir" and dated on the verso, "1803 dec 12;" on the top of the page, in pencil in another hand, is written "To Wm Porden." The letter only briefly mentions the Prince of Wales and is mainly about the installation, placement and use of a stove in a house that is being built. William Porden was the architect who designed Steine House in Brighton, England, for Fitzherbert; she lived there from 1804 until her death in 1837. The letter was mounted on board by a previous owner.

In this letter, written while Burroughs was on the S. S. Mongolia, he discusses his recent trip to California where he visited Riverside, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and Yosemite, where he was given a tour by John Muir. The letter is signed "John Burroughs," but text is in the hand of Dr. Clara Barrus; the envelope is postmarked Honolulu, Hawaii, May 11, 1909. The letter is addressed to John W. Childs of Floral Park, Long Island, New York.

She advises Mrs. Foster not to delay, for she believes the price of land will increase sharply in the very near future.

This material includes a Memorandum book, 2 manuscripts, 8 letters and 12 bills and receipts. The Memorandum book, bills & receipts include detailed records of expenditure on specific books, apparel, hairdressing, accomodation, a harpsichord, dancing lessons, food and many other personal items; all of the items provide an overview of the cost of a polite Georgian upbringing for a young woman in the late 1770s and 1780s. The manuscripts include a Valentine Day poem and an Account of Frosts; the letters, written by various male suitors, contain expressions of love and esteem.
