    Queen of Hawaii, Liliuokalani letters to William Lee

    The letters authored by Queen Liliuokalani were written to her husband's cousin William Lee, of Lee and Shephard Publishers, while she was visiting Washington D.C. These letters deal chiefly with her book Hawaii's story by Hawaii's Queen. Liliuokalani asks Lee questions about copyright and strategies for selling the book. She also writes that she is going to sign three copies and send them to Queen Victoria, President William McKinley and Grover Cleveland; one letter mentions Gerrit P. Judd and Richard Armstrong

    Ann Moore journals, (bulk 1756-1760)

    Manuscripts

    Journals kept by Ann Moore during her two voyages in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York (Aug. 1756 - Jan. 1757, and Dec. 1757 - Apr. 1758), and her voyage to England (Sept. 1760-June 1763). The manuscripts also contain Anne Moore's poetry, a copy of a letter to her from her "dear friend and tender companion" Alice Jackson (1778) and "A short testimony of Ann Moore concerning her friend and companion, Alice Jackson, deceased," family records, a copy of a letter from Elizabeth Prosser to her son (1798), and "a copy of a Prophecy for Ann More" (1783)

    Ann Renaudet Chevalier letter to Charles Willson Peale

    This autograph letter signed is addressed to Mr. Peale at the Museum (Peale retired from the museum in 1810, this letter may be for him or one of his sons who replaced him). Chevalier writes, "Sir, Please to receive in your Museum a little pensionnary that came last night to take refuge in the house where I live: It is a screetch-owl of the smallest and beautiful kind, I had always been told that such birds were ominous creatures; but the contrary I now find in the opportunity this offers me, by presenting you with it, to do something with that perhaps may prove agreeable to you. I am with respect, Anne Renaudet Chevalier."

    The collection consists of correspondence between Ida May Pope, her sister Anne, and fellow Hawaiians, missionaries and teachers. Some of the letters are written from the island Kosrae (Kusaie), Micronesia. Many of the letters include newspaper clippings or notes including obituaries for Ida May Pope. There are also two receipts. There is also an article about Anne Pope (after her death in 1932). Also included is a copy of Ida May Pope's Last Will & Testament. Subjects included in this collection include: education and teachers in Hawaii (and Kosrae); Hawaiian history and social customs; King David Kalakaua; Kamehameha Girls' School; Queen Liliuokalani; and the leper colony on Molokai.
