The collection consists of the 1849 sea voyage diary of Arthur Mercein Ebbets (121 pages) and supplementary material, including six letters by Charlotte White Penniman Ebbets, written during her 1853 voyage on the steamer Tennessee (which ran aground near San Francisco); 14 folders of biographical manuscripts about Arthur written by Charlotte Penniman Ebbets; other family manuscripts; and correspondence of Rosario Curletti regarding the diary and letters. Nineteen pages of pencil drawings by Arthur Ebbets, depicting scenes from his voyage, accompany the diary.

Samuel Nichols papers

The collection contains letters from Samuel Nichols to family discussing his 1849 overland journey and 1850 ocean voyage to San Francisco via Panama. There are also four letters from his wife, Sarah Ann Taylor Nichols. Among other family papers, there is a diary, from 1821 to 1822, and autobiography, 1821, by Benjamin Hodge, a relative of the Nichols family.

Ben Field papers

The papers include a diary Field wrote while on a voyage from San Pedro, California, to England in 1886, as well as correspondence, from the 1930s and 1940s, both by and to Ben Field. In the diary of his voyage around Cape Horn, Field details his experience on the ship Micronesia including the longitude and latitude of the ship, weather conditions, and other ships sighted. The correspondence is chiefly about poetry and writers in California. Several poets and authors are represented in the correspondence including Cyril Clemens, Jay Roderic De Spain, Frank Forrest Latta, Elinor Lennen, Morse Irl, and Lucia Trent; there is one letter by singer and actress Connie Boswell. Also mentioned in the letters are the League of Western Writers, Rob Wagner, the founder of the magazine Script, and poetry contests. The collection also contains two poems by Field
