Benjamin Jordan Kern letter to "Joe,"

In this letter to the otherwise unidentified "Joe", Benjamin Kern describes his treacherous journey with an unknown number of military companions through the wilderness of New Mexico. This was part of Colonel John C. Frémont's fourth expedition, searching for a route to the Pacific coast. Unfortunately, Kern lost his life during the expedition, as he was killed by Indians.

In this letter, written to British writer Sir Rider Haggard, the Maharaja states "I have been interested in the tragedy of the last Czar - but unfortunately I do not find any books or magazines which give a detailed account of the horrible murder." He then asks Haggard to suggest sources for him regarding the Czar's murder.

In this diary, Hurlbut describes his journey from Vermont to California via steamboat. He landed at Sacramento in April, 1852, and set to work making a land claim and searching for gold. The bulk of the volume contains notations concerning financial accounts and related details. Volume has pre-printed pages, dated January 1 through December 31, 1852.

Includes prose accounts of the population, crops, irrigation, geography, cost of goods, and losses from Indian attacks for Sanpete County, Juab County, Sevier County, Piute County, Millard County, Beaver County, Iron County, Washington County, and Kane County. Smith also writes of the difficulty of reporting property losses because of the lack of roads and bridges and high postage costs.
