Eben Chapman letter to Eben Hunt

Chapman writes that he has heard no news from home, and that a bank draft he sent to his wife was returned. He has found gold in California but not as much as he expected. Of California, he writes, "For the timid here is no place, he that would do well here must have courage," and describes the many plights of the miner. he also asks for Hunt's help regarding a debt owed him.

William Halley letter to Henry J. Morgan

This letter by William Halley, which is on letterhead for The sun printing and publishing company, is written to Canadian author Henry J. Morgan. In it, Halley mentions his book Hand-Book of the California Legislature and asks Morgan for a copy of his most recent handbook publication. Halley also talks about the California Constitutional Convention planned for the fall of 1878. He says "I think there are many things in the Canadian system that could be introduced here with advantage...." He also asks Morgan to send him a copy of the statutes of Canada "if they do not cost too much." Halley also states "I believe Canada is far ahead of California in the possession of just and equitable laws."

William Wesley Chapman letter to Lillian Merrill
Manuscripts
Collection consists of diaries and notebooks, correspondence, and legal and administrative records of the Chapman family from 1769 to 1936, especially William Wesley Chapman. Much of the material documents the family's history in Illinois in the mid-19th century. Several William Wesley Chapman items detail his travels to and from California on the overland Oregon Trail in 1849 and by sea from San Francisco via Nicaragua in 1850. Also present is an 1852 deed for land in Edwardsville, Illinois, with the secretarial signature of President Millard Fillmore.
