    Eben Chapman letter to Eben Hunt

    Chapman writes that he has heard no news from home, and that a bank draft he sent to his wife was returned. He has found gold in California but not as much as he expected. Of California, he writes, "For the timid here is no place, he that would do well here must have courage," and describes the many plights of the miner. he also asks for Hunt's help regarding a debt owed him.

    August F. W. Partz letter to C. Elton Buck

    A wide-ranging letter from August F. W. Partz to his business partner C. Elton Buck. This letter begins with his efforts to gain control over a massive mercury mine near New Idria, CA, what he describes as "the biggest quicksilver property in the world." He goes on to describe a new desulphurizing process, a variety of negotiations for the purchase of gold mines, plans for a stamp mill at Blind Springs, and a wealth of other mining topics. This is not a Gold Rush letter from a humble prospector, but rather from an industrialist thinking on a large scale. With a full typed transcript. Written in San Francisco; with numerous editorial marks and revisions.

    Eben Chapman letters to Eben Hunt

    Manuscripts

    Chapman discusses the prices of goods and market conditions in San Francisco. He also writes of his own mining and farming prospects, and of other various business dealings. He also discusses the idea of slavery in California in HM 4199. HM 4198, dated July 1, 1852, is incomplete, consisting of only the first three pages. HM 4199 is dated July, 1852.

    C.R. Chapman letters to Turbesé Lummis Fiske

    Two of the letters by Chapman to Fiske were written from his ranch near Mount Baldy. The other letter was written from the Lucky Seven Ranch, owned by F. D. McCulloch, and located outside of McDermitt, Nevada. In all three of the letters, Chapman discusses life on a ranch and gives details regarding dealing with cattle; he also gives descriptions of the staff of the Lucky Seven Ranch, and the town of McDermitt, Nevada.

    William Chapman Ralston letter to the Oriental Bank Corporation

    Manuscripts

    Letter from William Chapman Ralston at the Bank of California in San Francisco to the Oriental Bank Corporation in Yokohama, Japan. The letter was apparently carried by William H. Seward, and asks that he be extended "any civilities" with the Bank of California's "most grateful acknowledgments."
