    Henry Ballard journal

    Typescript of a journal kept by Henry Ballard from the time of his departure from England in 1832 until 1904. He describes his journey to the United States onboard the Kennebec and gives a first hand account of the explosion of the Saluda in 1852. He also keeps an almost daily record of his time fighting in the Utah War from 1857-1858, which includes references to Orrin Porter Rockwell, the taking of Fort Bridger, and the establishment of Camp Floyd by the United States Army. Ballard travelled frequently throughout Utah and to Wyoming, and included is a careful record of these travels. Much of the journal focuses on his daily life in Logan, Utah, as well as descriptions of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints activities and leaders, including Joseph Young, George Albert Smith, and John Taylor. Brief references to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and Ballard's attendance of Brigham Young's funeral are also included.

    Camp Floyd materials

    This collection includes 11 documents and letters related to activities at Camp Floyd (Fort Crittenden), Utah, in the aftermath of the Utah Expedition (1857-1858). Materials include lists of men and property employed at both Rush Valley and Camp Floyd, several letters from Parmenas Taylor Turnley to Bennett Smith describing transfer operations from Rush Valley to Camp Floyd as well as the need for added security against supply theft, and an itinerary of James Hervey Simpson's travels from Carson Valley to Camp Floyd. Also included is a letter from Ben Holladay describing the moving of supplies from Carson Valley to Camp Floyd. In addition to the Camp Floyd materials, the collection also contains a folder of ephemera (bank deposit slips, receipts from the Oregon and California Railroad Company, and promissory notes) relating to the business dealings of Willis Dunegan (Dunagan, Dunigan) and his relatives.

This biographical account discusses James' preparation for and emigration to Utah and his work in Cedar City. It also provides details about the lives of his four children, Ellen, James, Mary, and Sarah.

    This small group consists of legal family papers, including a deed, articles of agreement, and an estate document. Also in the group are photostat copies of register entries and certificates of the Fairbanks and Brooks families, as well as copies of two journals written by John Daniel Thompson McAllister (1827-1910), that detail his missionary trip to Europe, his involvement in the Utah Expedition, 1857-1858, and his journey in a handcart company from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Salt Lake City, Utah.
