Description: Miscellaneous letters and correspondence of Samuel Ryan Curtis, chiefly letters addressed to him, documenting his political, and military career. The collection includes: letters and newspapers clippings related to 1860 presidential elections and Curtis' own campaign, including the tallies for various Iowa counties; correspondence related to his removal from the Dept. of Missouri in 1863, including a lengthy letter from Jacob Brinkerhoff to his brother Henry B. Curtis, describing his meeting with Abraham Lincoln regarding the case (1863, Nov. 11), and letters to Curtis from his friends and colleagues.

Included are: a 1828 letter from West Point, discussing the cadet life and national politics (including the presidential elections); letters recounting Curtis' service in the Mexican War (1846, July - 1847, Nov.), his political and professional activities in 1849 and 1857, the Civil War (including the battle of Pea Ridge), and post-war service

A collection of family correspondence containing 110 items; the letters are chiefly to Delia Augusta and Sarah Henrietta Curtis from their brothers. The letters include discussion of the Curtis sisters' studies and education, family news, the Civil War, life in Ohio, Tennessee, Arizona, and California, from 1820 to 1892; also included are a few letters of Henry James and Clarissa Fisher Curtis. The collection also contains a typewritten summary and outline of the Curtis family letters (1984) and ephemera.

R. Curtis Edgerton papers

Collection consists of 53 letters written by Reuben Curtis Edgerton between October 1861 and June 1862. Edgerton addressed 52 of the letters to his wife Lydia O. Edgerton, nee Tiffany, and one letter to his daughter Ellen Edgerton. In his letters, Edergton describes a soldier's life and medical and sanitary affairs during the American Civil War from 1861-1862. Thirty-six of the letters were written while Edgerton was stationed in Hannibal, Pleasant, and Commerce, Missouri. Other letters originated from Tennessee, Mississippi, and New York.

This collection primarily consists of printed material related to naturalist and ornithologist Samuel Frank Dexter, 1847-1906. There are seven books: Field Guide to Wildflowers by Roger Tory Peterson; A Field Guide to Trees and Shrubs by George A. Petrides; A Field Guide to Western Birds by Roger Tory Peterson; How to Know the Birds...by Roger Tory Peterson; Land Birds Bird Guide. Land Birds East of the Rockies by Chester A. Reed; The Observer's Book of British Birds by S. Vere Benson; and What Bird is That? by C.A. Stebbins and R.C. Stebbins. There is also a lengthy run of 19th century ornithological periodicals. There are at least 120 issues of Ornithologist and Oologist published by Frank A. Webster from January 1884 through October 1893. There is also a small run of Birds: A Monthly Serial Designed to Promote Knowledge of Bird-Life from 1897 through 1898. Other printed matter includes two copies of The Audubon Magazine, vol. I, no. 9 and vol. LXIV, no. 1. An item of interest is "Taxidermist's Note Book on Collecting Trips of Wm. J. Magee". The contents of the notebook include an index of birds collected by Magee in 1875; descriptions of collecting expeditions, procedures, and weather condition in the New England region in 1876; and general remarks for the season of 1882 and 1883.
