Description: This typescript of Tuttle's reminiscences is the not the same as the text he had published in 1906. This account, which is much shorter in length, focuses upon Tuttle's stagecoach journey west to Salt Lake City, including a stop in Denver, and his experience traveling in the West while he was Bishop of Montana, Idaho, and Utah. He talks about specific stagecoach drivers and employees of Wells, Fargo & Company, and tells stories about stagecoach robberies and accidents. This account also includes Tuttle's meeting with Brigham Young shortly after he arrived in Salt Lake City in 1867

This is a typescript collected by Juanita Broooks from a manuscript loaned by Fannie Stott. It describes Thomas Day's early childhood in England working at various factories to suppport his family; his conversion to Mormonism; his work as a missionary in England; the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean; his life in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and in Utah at Kanarraville, Circleville, Saint George, Salt Lake City, and Spanish Fork; and his contact with Native Americans while a missionary and in traveling.

Reminiscences of a gold miner

Manuscripts

Fisk starts his reminiscences in 1850 when he left Illinois for California. He describes his overland journey in a party of 20 wagons. He mentions the Native Americans they passed (specifically the Utes and Otos), Fort Laramie, and how the group had to leave items behind to speed their pace. He also talks about Salt Lake City, buffalo herds, and the group's constant search for water. Fisk then describes arriving in Hangtown (Placerville), his experience mining on the American River and leaving California to mine in Colorado. He writes briefly about his time with the 2nd Iowa Regiment. He also discusses his decision to travel to Alaska to try his hand at gold mining one more time. Following the reminiscences are typescripts of several letters from Fisk to his sister written while on his journey to Alaska.

An inventory of historical resource materials on microfilm for Cache Valley, Utah-Idaho

Manuscripts

Bibliographical inventory of manuscripts microfilmed for the writing of the book "The History of a Valley, Cache Valley, Utah-Idaho" (1956), edited by Joel E. Ricks and Everett L. Cooley. Each entry includes information about the author of the material, its date, and the size of each item, as well as notes on its provenance, as assembled by Samuel George Ellsworth. Most of the microfilmed items are public records from Cache County, as well as records from Franklin County and Preston, Idaho, and Logan, Hyrum, Smithfield, Richmond, and Wellsville, Utah. Also listed are personal items such as diaries, photographs, and scrapbooks. Several theses and dissertations related Utah and Mormon history are also included. The majority of the material was originally microfilmed between November 1955 and February 1956 in Logan, Utah, and Preston, Idaho. Material was later added at Provo and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Edwin Dickens letter to John Dickens

Manuscripts

Letter is written by "Edwin Dickens of California" to his uncle John Dickens in England. The letter is written from "Washington, South Yuba" which is in Nevada County. Dickens writes an account of his journey to California and comments on Salt Lake City and Mormons, and about how he went to "North West of California" to mine gold. Letter is sewn into and glued on other sheets of paper, which make covers.

William Eve papers, (bulk 1880-1891)

This small group of items consists of letters, sketches, photographs, a photograph album and ephemera (and are arranged in that manner, then chronologically). The majority of these items deal with Eve's railroad trip from New York to Salt Lake City and his time in Salt Lake City, Ibapah, and Gold Hill, Tooele County, Utah as well as Soda Springs, Idaho. In Eve's letters, which are written to his parents, he details his trip West including a tragic collision with a wagon that killed men and horses, the scenery he passes, and his arrival in Salt Lake City. He also talks about mining, sheep herding, farming, seeing the boxer Jim Corbett fight, the Blackfeet (Siksika) Indians and life in the West. Throughout all of his letters, which he is writing to entice his family to also come to America, Eve compares America and its people to England and its people. His sketches include things he sees in the West such as several American Indians, a miner's drill, a coyote, scorpion, and a locust. One of his letters contains a small panorama drawing of Gold Hill, Utah. The collection contains several notes and sketches from Eve's time in London. There are also three letters to William Eve by his sister Elizabeth Eve; these are written from New York City in the early 20th century. The photographs are of Eve family members around the turn of the century. The photograph album contains photographs from a flood in Salt Lake City in 1926 and some pictures of the family camping. The ephemera is a 1959 issue of the Utah American Legion's publication "Utah Legionnaire."
