Description: A proposition for establishing trade with Indians "Read and Reported by the Committee of Propositions and Grievances on May 17, 1699" (f. 5v). On July 1, 1688, Virginia Governor Francis Nicholson forwarded it to the Lords of Trade. Later Jones' proposition became the basis of Spotswood's Indian Company

Provenance: Purchased at Sotheby's, Sale, 7356, Lot 557, October 28, 1999. From the collection of Dr. Frank Siebert. The manuscript was part of the collection of Francis Nicholson, which was willed to the Society for the Progatation of the Gospel. Dr. Siebert purchased the manuscript from Henry Stevens in 1945.

Manuscript rough copy by Samuel Holland, approximately 1757, made from an original by Cadwallader Colden (1688-1776) following his initial survey in 1726. Documents the extensive New York land grants made by the Crown from 1684 and 1716. Is also an early depiction of the topographical layout of the area. The most southerly point depicted is at the 39th parallel and the most northerly the 43rd. The map encompasses territory from lower New Jersey to old Fort Burnett on the Hudson, north of Sarasota Lake. Two sheets stitched together.

Manuscript rough copy by Samuel Holland and Charles Rivez, approximately 1757, made from an original by Cadwallader Colden (1688-1776) following his initial survey in 1721 of the "Evans Tract". Depicts the ground plot of land from Hudson River to about 500 chains west of Goshen Township. Shows numerous property plots and the names of the holders.

Manuscript map showing the settlement of lands granted to Capt. John Evans in 1691. By 1726, Cadwallader Colden was engaged in surveying "Evan's Grant" in regard for quit rents. It notes the extent of settlement, and locates the remarkable houses, villages, churches and county towns. Depicts the area around modern day Kingston, Newburgh and Goshen.

Letter to congratulate Will Irwin on his Saturday Evening Post article, "Europe Today and Tomorrow." Jordan mentions that he is on a lecture tour speaking similarly about "the dynastic basis of war." Letter is on illustrated letterhead from the Davenport Hotel in Spokane, Washington.

Manuscripts

The collection is arranged alphabetically by title. The first box contains twelve of Guinn's autograph notebooks from his research on California in general - and on many specific California counties - which served as the basis for a number of local histories he published near the turn of the century. The collection's second box features autograph and typescript drafts of Guinn's speeches and papers, many of which were published in the Annual Publications of the Historical Society of Southern California or one of Los Angeles' many newspapers. Also included are a number of speeches on the methods and practice of education. The collection's third box contains a rather extensive collection of autograph and typescript manuscripts which formed the basis for Guinn's three-volume magnum opus A History of California and an Extended History of Los Angeles and Environs (1915).
