The collection consists of the personal and business papers of Henry E. Huntington. There is material related to the Huntington, Holladay, and Metcalf families, but most of the collection deals with Huntington's business interests in Southern California, railways, real estate, and industry. Series 2. Henry E. Huntington and his family includes biographical information, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, and physical objects. There is material related to the Huntington Land and Improvement Company, Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, and the Pacific Electric Railway Company as well as other businesses in Los Angeles County, Orange County, and San Gabriel Valley, California. This material includes business records, account books, annual reports, correspondence, maps, tracts, balance sheets, and others. There is also material related to the founding of the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens including auction catalogs, invoices, receipts, and bills for art and rare books, and information regarding a lawsuit about Huntington's estate tax after his death, and the passing of Proposition 15, in 1930, which exempted The Huntington from paying California property tax. There is also material related to Collis P. Huntington and his business interests and Arabella Huntington. Also included are the blueprints for the Huntington's San Marino residence. Series 3. Correspondence contains over 22,000 pieces of personal and business correspondence spanning 1794 to 1970. The physical objects include Henry E. Huntington's lunch box, razors, traveling trunk, and other items.

The collection consists of letters, manuscripts, and documents (including 7 fieldbooks, a journal, an account book, and a notebook) related to the life and business activities of Milo Hoadley. Subject matter includes life in and near San Francisco (1850-52), official and private surveys made in San Francisco city and county (1849-62), and land titles in San Francisco city and county. There is also information on the controversy in supplying water to San Francisco (1852-72), in which Hoadley's San Francisco Water Co. unsuccessfully tried to displace the Spring Valley Water Company.

Griffith includes some information about the ships including their cargos, days of voyage, whether or not ships are cleared, and ports of destination for those ships departing from San Francisco.

Journal of a voyage from New London to San Francisco, Upper California, keeped by Latham A. Brown

Sea journal kept by Latham A. Brown aboard the schooner Odd Fellow during the ship's 1849 voyage to San Francisco. Some notable entries include an encounter with the the bark Flora, which reported "joyful news from the gold diggings, which revived our company very much" (March 22), and going ashore in "Patigonia [sic] called the Peninsula of St. Joseph...this day being the most pleasant of any day since I left home we ar[e] surrounded by Penguins and varios [sic] other Birds" (April 12). Also included is a journal entitled "Latham A. Brown's Book, 1847," which is a seaman's exercise book assembled by Brown and which includes rules of traverse sailing, mercator sailing, how to find longitude and latitude, predicting tides, star declination, and finding latitudes by the moon, each with tables, problems, examples, and sketches of ships. Other items include an American Ship Masters' Association certificate naming Brown an approved shipmaster (1865) and several abstract logs for the schooner Restless from travels in the South Pacific, including Honolulu, Tahiti, and Sydney, from the mid-1850s.

Journal and San Francisco Committee of Vigilance Membership Certificate of Sylvanus B. Marston

The journal, which contains 57 pages, covers the entire voyage from Bangor to San Francisco. It includes descriptions of the weather, ocean conditions, and other ships the Cantero encountered along the passage. Marston describes his stays at Santa Catarina Island (Brazil) and Valparìso (Chile), including details about the people he met, the food he ate and the churches and places he visited. The journal contains two songs, written by a passenger on board, about going to California in search of gold. The certificate for Marston's membership in the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance measures 51 x 38 cm.

William H. Dougal journal of a voyage from New York to San Francisco

This manuscript describes the journey of William H. Dougal, an engraver and artist, who traveled from New York to San Francisco via Cape Horn in 1849, as a passenger aboard the ship "Galindo." Much of the seabound content concerns the weather. Dougal goes ashore in Chile on November 17 and describes the land and its people. He is particularly impressed with the horsemanship of the Chileans. The final date listed is November 22, where Dougal reports the ship is eight miles from San Francisco. Published as "Off for California" (RB 277286), of which this manuscript appears to be a printer's copy. Typescript from original held by San Mateo Historical Society. Includes 20 photographs of drawings by the author, some with typewritten captions on verso, and a seven-page typescript likely intended to be included in the published version.
