The collection consists of letters, a letter book, manuscripts, a journal, a sketch of Fort Ludlow, Washington, a map, and documents. There is one logbook related to the voyage of the Ship Sarah Parker to San Francisco via Cape Horn, from 1852 to 1855, visits to North Pacific ports, and the return trip to Massachusetts. The journal in the collection is by Charlotte Coffin Gardner. The collection also contains a few accounts for the ships Courier, Mary Mitchell, and Flora. There is also correspondence in the collection from 1920 to 1965, most of which is between Grace Brown Gardner, the granddaughter of William B. Gardner and Charlotte Gardner, and Eleanor Jane Graves. This correspondence focuses on the Gardner journal and early Nantucket inhabitants. There are also photographs of William B. Garner and Charlotte Gardiner, dated between 1850 and 1870.

The "California Gold Rush Fleet Encyclopedia of Vessels Sailing from the East Coast of the United States and Canada for San Francisco, December 7, 1848-December 31, 1849" comprises individual histories of 762 ships as well as various subject files, arranged in alphabetical order. Goodman records a broad spectrum of information derived from a variety of sources about the multitude of Gold Rush vessels. The bulk of the manuscripts are photocopies and some are heavily annotated in the author's hand. Some histories include hand colored illustrations of maps and ships. They were written and edited between 1970-1991.

The journal, which contains 57 pages, covers the entire voyage from Bangor to San Francisco. It includes descriptions of the weather, ocean conditions, and other ships the Cantero encountered along the passage. Marston describes his stays at Santa Catarina Island (Brazil) and Valparìso (Chile), including details about the people he met, the food he ate and the churches and places he visited. The journal contains two songs, written by a passenger on board, about going to California in search of gold. The certificate for Marston's membership in the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance measures 51 x 38 cm.

The collection consists of letters, manuscripts, and documents (including 7 fieldbooks, a journal, an account book, and a notebook) related to the life and business activities of Milo Hoadley. Subject matter includes life in and near San Francisco (1850-52), official and private surveys made in San Francisco city and county (1849-62), and land titles in San Francisco city and county. There is also information on the controversy in supplying water to San Francisco (1852-72), in which Hoadley's San Francisco Water Co. unsuccessfully tried to displace the Spring Valley Water Company.
