Sir James Houblon's notebooks regarding international trade

    Manuscripts

HM 83393 : "A Relation of my voyage made with Sr Juan Esquerdo to Medina & ca." A manuscript account of a 1683 trip through Spain from Chicana to Medina, including the towns of Beheal and Coneal. This was a business trip for Houblon as he describes the harvest and markets for grapes and olives, but he also comments on capital punishment, medical care, religious houses, architecture, marriage and inheritance customs. The 17 page manuscript was removed from a volume and there are remnants of the spine remaining on the pages; there is a strong possibility this manuscript and HM 83394 were once part of the same volume.

John Hovey journal of a voyage from Newburyport, Mass. to San Francisco, Cal

    Manuscripts

This journal follows the travels of John Hovey from Massachusetts to California. He departs from Newburyport aboard the vessel Charlott on January 23, 1849; a manifest of crew and passengers is included on pages one and two. Much of the seagoing details are concerned with the weather. The ship reached port on July 23, 1849. He journeyed along the Sacramento River and Mokelumne River with his companions, searching for gold. He was involved with separate disputes over claims with miners from Chile and France (see also HM 4384-4385 which are transcripts of these entries removed from this volume). Hovey departs California by ship on May 30, 1851. Bound volume, with many color illustrations.

    John Warly notebooks

    Manuscripts

Two manuscript volumes attributed to Reverend John Warly; included are biblical passages, sermon notes, and commentaries on spiritual matters and political subjects including the English Civil War. Entries are in secretary hand, primarily in English with a small amount of Greek. The volumes are signed by Lee Warly, a descendant of John Warly; both volumes are written in two directions with the text beginning at one cover then turned over and beginning again (tête-bêche style). The volumes have worn leather covers and fragile spines, HM 83773 is especially fragile with the spine mostly lacking and the pages loose; the volumes are housed in one box for preservation purposes.
