Collection contains three John Quincy Adams autograph letters or notes signed to: Benjamin Waterhouse, 1817 February 9 (HM 52212); John Adams, 1817 December 26 (HM 52213); and Mrs. W.D. Lewis, 1832 April 8 (HM 52215). Also present is one Marquis de Lafayette, New York, autograph letter signed to Joseph Lewis and James Kilmer, Philadelphia, 1824 September 22 (HM 52214).John Quincy Adams' letter to Benjamin Waterhouse is written from Ealing, London, and discusses British politics and an attack on the Prince Regent George IV's coach in London; his note to John Adams concerns finances and the bankruptcy of Robert Bird. Lafayette's letter relates to his upcoming visit to Philadelphia.

John Chase letter to Benjamin Chase

A four-page letter from John Chase to his brother Benjamin Chase (1799-1889), written from Washington, D.C., about the public and political reactions following the inauguration of John Quincy Adams (1767-1848). In the letter he details the fallout of the 1824 presidential election and the outcry from the supporters of Andrew Jackson, including the burning of Henry Clay in effigy. Chase also talks about the writings of Pennsylvania Congressman George Kremer (1775-1854), the election of New Hampshire Representative Nehemiah Eastman (1782-1856), and politics in Peru and Greece. He also states he will send more about Adams' inauguration to their father via Governor Bell. Accompanied by a typescript of the letter.

This collection contains 21 letters and drawings related to or by English writer Samuel Johnson that were previously bound together in one volume. Items include six letters by Samuel Johnson to various recipients: publisher Thomas Longman (HM 20824); Samuel Richardson (HM 20821); John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (HM 20825); Nathan Wetherell (HM 20826); and two letters to John Taylor (HM 20822, HM 20827), as well as an 1841 letter from Taylor (HM 20823) and notes by Johnson scholar George Birkbeck Hill (HM 40967) about the June 23, 1784, letter from Johnson to Taylor. There are also single letters from Alexander Johnson (HM 20828); William Seward (HM 20829); James Boswell to his daughter (HM 20830); Hester Lynch Piozzi (HM 20831); Sir Joshua Reynolds (HM 20832); and William Cowper (HM 20833) to various individuals (not Samuel Johnson). There are also seven drawings and one 1916 newspaper clipping. The drawings include an unfinished drawing of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Edmund Burke, Samuel Johnson, and others (HM 40960), copies of portraits of Johnson, and images of locations related to Johnson. Items were originally bound in a folio black straight-grained morocco binding that was disbound in 1975.
