Description: A collection of personal correspondence of Christian T. Christensen, chiefly letters addressed to him. Included are letters received by Christensen on the occasion of his retirement from the Army in June 1865, a few official communications and personal letters received by Christensen during his war service, and a telegram from James T. Holtzclaw negotiating the surrender of Mobile, Alabama (April 1865). The post-war correspondence includes letters from Eunice Ward Beecher and Henry Ward Beecher, Lyman Abbott, William Tecumseh Sherman, and others, chiefly concerning his charity work and Civil War experience. Also included are Christensen's military commissions and other documents, an address entitled "Women's influence" that Christensen delivered at the Working Women's Club on November 10, 1887, and a letter soliciting donations for the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute signed by Booker T. Washington (1904).

Fields, James T. (1861-1866)

The collections consist primarily of letters from various American and British authors to James Fields, mostly relating to publication of their manuscripts by his firm Ticknor and Fields and in The Atlantic monthly. The collection, and especially the addenda, also includes letters to Annie Fields concerning literary matters. There are also poems, manuscripts, and correspondence by and about the following individuals: Thomas Aldrich, Charlotte Cushman, Charles Dickens, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jessie Benton Frémont, Edward Everett Hale, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Julia Ward Howe, Helen Hunt Jackson, Sarah Orne Jewett, Lucy Larcom, Sara Jane Clarke Lippincott (better known by her pen name Grace Greenwood), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Helena Modjeska, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Celia Thaxter, Booker T. Washington and John Greenleaf Whittier. The collection also contains essays, notes, speeches, notebooks, photographs, and articles. The collections chiefly deal with the activities of Ticknor and Fields, as well as Fields' and his wife's own literary efforts. The following authors are subjects in the collections: Robert Burns, Lord Byron, John Milton and Percy Shelley. Presidential items in this collection include John Adams autograph bill for legal services to Thomas Pratt, 1767 October 14 (mssFI 5102) and two autograph letters signed from William H. Taft to Annie Adams Fields, 1914 February? and 1914 March 10 (mssFI 4098, mssFI 4099).

Manuscripts

The collection consists of papers relating to the U.S. Navy and to naval officers. Material includes letters, orders, commissions, engravings, records of various ships, including the U.S.S. Constitution, and other documents, primarily dealing with the naval operations of the Revolutionary War and nineteenth century wars, including the War of 1812 and the Civil War. There is also a small group of items concerning the British Navy. The collection was assembled by Charles T. Harbeck for purposes of extra-illustrating Edgar Stanton Maclay's History of the U. S. Navy, but the project was not completed.

Lewis T. Pim papers, (bulk 1861-1885)

Manuscripts

Military and professional papers of Lewis T. Pim, chiefly special orders, commissions, communications, circulars, etc., with a few personal letters, documenting his Civil War and post-war career. Correspondents include John C. Breckenridge, Simon Bolivar Buckner, D. H. Maury, G.T. Beauregard, and J. E. Johnston. The correspondence also includes letters from Edwin Samuel Gaillard (1827-1885), a fellow Confederate veteran and the dean of Louisville Medical College.
