Sir William Clayton's journal details his 1871-1872 tour of the United States and parts of Central America. After crossing the Atlantic aboard the steamship Abyssinia, Clayton and his travelling companion arrive in New York at the end of October 1871. A brief stay in New York is followed by a train journey to Niagara Falls and thence to Chicago by way of Buffalo and Pittsburgh. After a brief description of the fire ravaged city, the journey continues on to Omaha. From Omaha, the train journey continues to Salt Lake City, where the travelers stay at the Townsend House. Several pages are devoted to Salt Lake, including a description of services at the Tabernacle. Next, Clayton departs via Pullman car to San Francisco, where he and his companion arrive in November 1871. Their stay in San Francisco includes visits to Cliff House, "China Town" and other sites, plus a trip to the New Almaden quicksilver mines near San Jose. Clayton leaves California by ship to return to New York via Panama. In addition to an account of Panama, Clayton describes visits to Jamaica, Mazatlan, Guatemala, Louisville, and New Orleans. Clayton returns to England in March of 1872. Clayton is an avid observer of "Americans" and throughout the journey describes, in great detail, his encounters with said individuals.

This manuscript is Clayton's report on mining properties in Silverton, Colorado. His conclusion is that "a majority of the locations will warrant exploration" and "a few are worthless." He also states that "it will require all of next season in active development of a few of the best claims before the question of reduction works can be intelligently determined."

Notebook compiled by J.W. Mandeville, including written descriptions of California ranchos, their histories, geographic features, and handrawn maps. Ranchos and geographic areas described include Laguna de San Antonio, Roblar de la Miseria, Arroyo Seco (Alameda County), Rincon de Musalacon, Tzabaco Rancho, Rancho San Antonio (Peralta), Rancho San Leandro, Rancho San Lorenzo, Rancho Arroyo de la Alameda, Rancho los Tulareitos, and Rancho del Agua Caliente. The back of the book contains what appear to be student exercises and notes, including poetry, recipes for gunpowder and ink, and notes on the preservation and taxidermy of birds. These notes are in a variety of handwritings and dated 1876-1904.

The collection primarily consists of incoming correspondence to the Wells, Van Dyke, & Lee law firm from their various clients and legal colleagues. The content of the cases represented is mainly civil, most heavily focused on divorces, estate settlements, and patents, as well as some correspondence on Mission Indian land cases, suits against railroads, water rights, and mining disputes. There are also a variety of advertisements from publishers, typewriter merchants, and other business connections, as well as a very few outgoing letters from Wells, Van Dyke, & Lee and limited personal correspondence. In addition to facts regarding specific cases, the letters provide an overview of general social issues, law fees and practices, property laws, patent laws, the status of women, child custody laws, divorce laws, and prevailing views of divorce in 1880s California. Some notable correspondents include Lucky Baldwin, theologian John Alonzo Fisher, American Bar Association co-founder Henry Hitchcock, California governor Henry Harrison Markham, US Secretary of State James Davis Porter, Coca-Cola Bottling Company founder B.F. Thomas, and Lucky Baldwin's ranch manager Hiram Unruh. The collection also includes the Superior Court Registry of Actions, Vol. 3 (1886-1888).

Markley expresses his condolences for the death of Chancey E. Stearns, who was Charles' brother. He writes of Chancey's recent visit to Somersville in Contra Costa County, where he met his death due to illness. He was a cook at a local hotel. Chancey's possessions will be forwarded to Charles. With photocopy of front side of envelope.
