George Cruikshank letters

Description
The collection contains seventy-one letters addressed to George Cruikshank or his wife, Eliza Cruikshank. Most of the correspondence is concerned with Cruikshank's participation in the Temperance movement and many are requests for his presence at temperance society meetings. Some letters concern Cruikshank's art as well as his, and Eliza's, personal life. Correspondents include William Henry Merle, Charles Rogers, John Sheringham, H.E. Taylor and John Drayton Wyatt.

    On the back of pages 13 and 14 are 2 sketches which were Cruikshank's first ideas for the plate "Oliver plucks up a spirit" in Oliver Twist. At the end of the volume are bound up some autograph letters of Thackeray and others, also a sketch for the cover of a magazine which Cruikshank and Ainsworth intended to publish.

    George L. (George Leonard) Vose Letter to "My Dear Choate,"

    Manuscripts

    In this letter, Vose talks about his decision to leave his position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was dissatisfied with the engineering education at the school and felt that his opinions were being ignored. He mentions the previous president of the university William Rogers and former engineer professor John B. Henck.
