Description: On the back of pages 13 and 14 are 2 sketches which were Cruikshank's first ideas for the plate "Oliver plucks up a spirit" in Oliver Twist. At the end of the volume are bound up some autograph letters of Thackeray and others, also a sketch for the cover of a magazine which Cruikshank and Ainsworth intended to publish.

The collection contains seventy-one letters addressed to George Cruikshank or his wife, Eliza Cruikshank. Most of the correspondence is concerned with Cruikshank's participation in the Temperance movement and many are requests for his presence at temperance society meetings. Some letters concern Cruikshank's art as well as his, and Eliza's, personal life. Correspondents include William Henry Merle, Charles Rogers, John Sheringham, H.E. Taylor and John Drayton Wyatt.

A collection of letters and ephemera related to George Cruikshank. The correspondence includes letters to and from Cruikshank and deal with his work as an illustrator and author, as well as his social life and friendships. Correspondents in the collection include William Harrison Ainsworth, William Cox Bennett, Richard Bentley, Laman Blanchard, John Forster, Catherine Grace Frances Gore, and Crawford J. Pocock. Many of the letters contain sketches and drawings by Cruikshank, either as doodles or examples of proposed illustrations. The ephemera includes two clipped signatures, a signed printed portrait of Cruikshank, and printed illustrations by Cruikshank from various publications.
