Anonymous autograph diary written aboard the ship Herculean and in California
Manuscripts
The diary contains 122 pages, 109 of which have writing on them. Most of the entries are in blue ink but there are also some in pencil. The ship "Herculean" left Boston in November 1849 filled with gold-seekers for California, traveled around Cape Horn, and arrived in San Francisco in May 1850. The volume begins with a list of the names of the crew and passengers on board the Herculean and is filled with tales of the ocean journey and shipboard entertainment, including a description of a stop in Valparaiso, Chile. The entries between May 6 and June 18, 1850 describe the city of San Francisco and also the towns of Stockton and Benicia, discuss prices in California for labor and lumber, and contain an account of his tent being robbed

The image is of the first Tennessee operated by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company; built in 1849, she was purchased in October, 1849, from the Savannah Steam Navigation Company; from 1850 to 1853, she operated between San Francisco and Panama; she was wrecked on 6 March 1853, at Bolinas Bay, four miles north of the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Vineyard Mining Company minutes of meetings and constitution

This document lists the twenty-three articles of the constitution of the Vineyard Mining Company, dated 1849, attested and signed by Edward Crocker and Frederick Pease. Following the constitution are minutes from various meetings of the company, from 1850-1851, the first of which took place at the home of William H. Munroe, in Edgartown, Massachusetts. The Company appears to have been formed prior to departure for California, where it intends to base its operations. They will embark aboard the ship Sarah, captained by John O. Morse.
