    J. J. (Joseph John) Thomson letter to Gilbert Stead

    Manuscripts

    Letter by Thomson to fellow British physicist Gilbert Stead. The letter reads as follows "Dear Mr. Stead, It was a very great pleasure to me to receive your letter for I remember very well how much I owed to your help during the time I was on the Commission. I hope it will not be long before we meet again. Yours very sincerely, J. J. Thomson." The letter was written in Cambridge.

    Joseph P. Colcord letter to Frank H. Norton

    Manuscripts

    Colcord apologizes for the delay of his response, which "deferred my desired interview with Major Heiss." He writes that the major informed him that Norton's credentials are "of the highest and most satisfactory character" and that his prior contributions "to the paper was in all respects first class." It is Colcord's hope that Norton shall be given "renumerative employment on the editorial staff." He extends an invitation to Norton's family on behalf of himself and his wife. On printed letterhead of the State of Missouri House of Representatives.

    Edwin M. (Edwin McMasters) Stanton letter to Ogden Hoffman

    Manuscripts

    Stanton writes to Hoffman "in respect to the publication of your decision." He also hopes Hoffman will soon have time for leisure upon finishing current land cases, and away from Washington, D.C.: "I mean in New York which after all next to San Francisco is the only place on the continent for a gentleman of leisure."

    John Milton Bernhisel letter to Franklin Pierce

    Manuscripts

    Letter to President Franklin Pierce from John Milton Bernhisel, written while he was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bernhisel writes to Pierce of public opinion in Utah, particularly regarding the Territory's desire to retain Brigham Young as governor. Bernhisel praises Young, noting that he possesses "the entire confidence of the people." He continues that "respecting Governor Young I would...refer your Excellency to...Stephen A. Douglas of the United States Senate." Bernhisel continues that Utah would like to see Zerubbabel Snow kept as Associate Judge, and that Seth M. Blair remain as United States Attorney for the district of Utah, and mentions Blair's original recommendation from Sam Houston. The letter is unsigned and appears incomplete.
