American solider Edward Otho Cresap Ord gives an account of his travels through California, to San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara in particular. He was under orders to "make sundry examinations and investigations" in that region. He arrived at Santa Barbara via the coasting steamer "Sea Bird," and makes much observation of the native people. Dated 1849, August.

These items, which are copies of bulletins, reports, letters, statements and speeches, all deal with the merger of the Los Angeles city's Department of Health and Los Angeles County's Health Department. A majority of the items were written by C. Erwin Piper, Los Angeles City Administrative Officer. Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty is mentioned in some of the documents. Other participants include several physicians including Lewis T. Bullock, Lenor S. Goerke, and Lyndon S. Hollinger. There are also four newspaper clippings.

Approx. 25 items: 8-pp. (stapled) on L.A. history which begins, "Our city's beginnings go back to 1769," which was the year explorer Portola and his expedition camped on the river very near present-day downtown ; newspapers and magazine article copies, brochures, maps and other ephemera ; original issue of Terra, Natural History Magazine of the West, Winter 1981, featuring article, "Los Angeles Plaza--living symbol of our past" (pp. 14) ; etc.
