    Edward Otho Cresap Ord letter to Collis Potter Huntington

    Manuscripts

    Letter from Edward Ord in Mexico City to Collis Potter Huntington. Ord writes that he had met with Mexican president Manuel Gonzalez Flores, when Ord had apparently given him a proposition relating to the railroad. The proposition appears to have related to the route of a rail line, which would be partly constructed on private land. Ord writes that he made "this communication in confidence and as a matter of duty to my employers."

    Gideon Johnson Pillow letter to Mrs. Mary E. Pillow

    Manuscripts

    Gideon Pillow writes to his wife of his ongoing recovery from a wound suffered during the Mexican War in 1847, and of his experiences as part of the struggle. He hopes to be well enough in a couple of weeks to resume his duties. He writes of his children, and says he will send his wife a lock of his hair in his next letter, which he hopes to write in ten days, as proof that the horrors of the war have not caused him to neglect "the requests of his dear wife."

    D. Townsend letter to Elizabeth Owens

    Manuscripts

    In this letter addressed to "Sister Elizabeth", D. Townsend writes of his life in Sonora. There have been so many shootings as of late that the townspeople have taken the law into their own hands and lynched several of those responsible, often without trials. Townsend has recently done very well as part of a gold mining company. He writes that many miners go home to fetch their families and relocate to California permanently. Signed "your well wishing Brother." Includes lithograph titled "A View of the Elephant," depicting the various experiences of a typical California miner.

    Moses H. Hyde letter to John Hyde

    Manuscripts

    In this letter to his father, Moses Hyde writes of family details and life in Sonora. He has been doing well financially since getting into the lumber business. It appears that his father and mother are struggling with their marriage, and Hyde offers some advice, as well as some of his views of the roles and responsibilities of women. He also writes of real estate and property prices in the area.

    Jacob P. Leese letter to Charles Debrille Poston

    Leese writes concerning details of the legal matter "laid before the Mexican Minister" and of his involvement. Leese appears to be forming a company, and decides to grant Poston power of attorney. Typescript of original. Also included are photocopied pages from a pamphlet with a brief biography of Leese.
