Description: In this letter to his father, Moses Hyde writes of family details and life in Sonora. He has been doing well financially since getting into the lumber business. It appears that his father and mother are struggling with their marriage, and Hyde offers some advice, as well as some of his views of the roles and responsibilities of women. He also writes of real estate and property prices in the area.

Aaron H. Hyde letters to John Hyde

Manuscripts

In these letters to his father, Aaron Hyde writes of the difficult time he has been having in California. In HM 16597, dated 1851, January 26, he writes that the miners are "disappointed" and that business in San Francisco is "dull." He laments that "California is a very bad place to make and carry out plans." In HM 16598. Aaron reports that he has come into business with a Mr. Cilley, who will be delivering the letter by hand when he returns to New Hampshire to gather his family for relocation to California. Aaron says he will come home himself in a year or two if the business does not work out.

Charles L. Hyde business correspondence

Manuscripts

The collection consists of 43 business letters written by Charles L. Hyde, 39 of which are addressed to O. D. Chester of Camden, Michigan. All of the correspondence deals with the real estate business in Pierre, South Dakota and Chester's investments in the city, with the recommendations of Hyde. Many of the letters are short notes stating that Hyde received payment from Chester, but others go into detail about the property available in Pierre. There is also some discussion of property taxes. Several of the letters have copies of Chester's reply to Hyde on verso of the letters. There is one letter by Omar Hollingsworth to O. D. Chester as well as two letters by Hyde to B. R. Alward, also of Camden, Michigan, and one letter by Hyde to William J. Sizemore of Charleston, Illinois. The collection includes ephemera material including: a pamphlet, brochure and article about Charles L. Hyde; map of city of Pierre, published by Charles L. Hyde; postcard receipts; tax receipts; and financial notes made by O. D. Chester to John I. Newell at the "Office of Charles L. Hyde."

David Saville letters to "My beloved wife,"

In HM 16646, dated 1861, January 31, Saville writes to his wife that he is confident he will be able to provide for them both financially. In HM 16647, dated 1861, April 30, he writes that he regrets some of his investing, and of the importance of preserving the Union "even if it should cost all the Treasure in the Country."

Charles Frederick Holder letter to John Vance Chaney

Manuscripts

Letter written from Charles F. Holder in Pasadena to John Vance Chaney, the head of the San Francisco Public Library. Holder writes that he has been delayed in getting back to San Francisco because of the "Tournament of Roses" given by his Hunt Club. He also asks Chaney if he has heard anything about "the Overland" (probably The Overland Monthly magazine), which he had been trying to acquire, and praises a newspaper man named Field of the San Francisco Chronicle.
