The journal kept by Thomas A. Dornin onboard the San. Jacinto "from the time of leaving Norfolk Febr. 21st 1860 to the taking command of the U.S. Steamer San Jacinto at Cadiz May 15th 1860 and continued druing her cruise on the Western Coast of Africa for the suppression of the slave trade till the 10th of August 1861 when I gave up the command of that vessel at Loanda & took command of the Frigate Constellation & sailed to the U. States 11th Aug. 1861 and arrived at Portsmouth N.H. on Sept. 28 1861 & gave up the command on the 12th day of October 1861."

Logbook of whaling ship from New Bedford to the South Pacific

Logbook kept by an unidentified person onboard the whaling ship Three Brothers of New Bedford, Massachusetts, captained by James M. Witherell (listed as James L. Witherell in logbook). The generally brief entries date from October 12, 1869 to August 18, 1873 and mention the ship's position, weather, prevailing winds, ships sighted, whales encountered, and some shipboard activity. A few entries mention anchoring and shoreleave but most do not give the location. Some entries appear to be in different hands, with one dated June 18, 1873 including a note regarding an officer's conduct signed by captain J.M. Witherell. Volume is bound and covered in cloth; the inside front cover has an advertising insert for C.R. Sherman & Co. Navigation Store, New Bedford.

Thoams Aloysius Dornin letterbook

The letterbook that Dornin kept while in command of the San Jacinto, from May 14, 1860 and August 8, 1861. The correspondents include Isaac Toucey, Secretary of the Navy, officers of Africa Squadron, the sailors and officers under his command, and the United States consul in Monrovia. Included are reports of captured slavers. The last two letters, dated Sept. 9 and 16, 1861, were written onboard the Constellation. Includes laid in letter from John L. Broome regarding prizeship Bonito, 1873.

Richard Malone log of the HMS Harrier

This ships' log was kept by Richard Malone for Commander Carew during the Harrier's three voyages to South America. Also included is the log of a short voyage in the Excellent, under Captain Sir Thomas Hastings. The volume includes ten manuscript maps (chiefly of waters off South America), one chart, and six original wash drawings of local views, profile elevations, etc., of Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Northern Peru, and other South American locales.
