The journal kept by Thomas A. Dornin onboard the San. Jacinto "from the time of leaving Norfolk Febr. 21st 1860 to the taking command of the U.S. Steamer San Jacinto at Cadiz May 15th 1860 and continued druing her cruise on the Western Coast of Africa for the suppression of the slave trade till the 10th of August 1861 when I gave up the command of that vessel at Loanda & took command of the Frigate Constellation & sailed to the U. States 11th Aug. 1861 and arrived at Portsmouth N.H. on Sept. 28 1861 & gave up the command on the 12th day of October 1861."

Journal that Isaac Howe kept onboard of the Constellation, from Oct. 27, 1840, the date the frigate was put in commission, to May 12, 1844, when the crew were discharged and paid off. The entries describe life onboard -- assignments, punishments, deaths, illnesses, etc.; report sightings of American and foreign ships; depict the ports, and relate political and international news. The entries include lists of officers and the crew, miles logged, the frigate's riggings, etc.

Letterbook of outgoing letters sent by San Francisco merchant Charles A. Thackston from May 15, 1852, to February 13, 1853. Most of the correspondence relates to Thackston's business contacts in New York, and references shipping, power of attorney, and notes on various residents of San Francisco. Some of the correspondence appears to be personal, possibly written to Thackston's brother. In a bound letterbook labeled "Leonora Thackston, Scrap Book, 1870."
