Kashnor collection of early American maps

The 85 manuscripts, known as the Kashnor maps, are named after the proprietor of the Museum Book Store, from which they were purchased. They include original maps and copies of cartographic renderings dating from the late 17th to the mid-19th centuries. The maps focus primarily on sites and land involved in the French and Indian War in New York and Canada (67 maps), but there are also maps related to the American Revolution (3 maps), and ones of Central America (4 maps), and other regions (10 maps). The collection also contains a drawing of a dart or fire-arrow retrieved near Fort William Henry after Montcalm's attack in 1757. Some of the maps in the collection are hand drawn copies of earlier maps. These include ones executed during the French and Indian War. There are also four maps charting the voyages of the H.M.S. Asia in 1848-1851 that were copies made in 1856. Consequently, the creation dates of the Kashnor maps are from 1754-1856.

Provenance
Purchased from Museum Book Store, 1924 & 1927. The collection was assembled by a private collector. It is possible that a number of the maps were in the possession of Lord Loudoun in 1757, since Samuel Holland and his assistant, Charles Rivez, were officers under John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun in the Royal American Regiment.

    Collection of 118 maps, 28 in manuscript, compiled sometime in the 18th century. Pagination is supplied in pencil in curatorial hand, rectos only numbered. The maps are primarily of the Americas, with special concentration in locations of particular interest to French imperial ambitions towards the end of the reign of Louis XIV (reigned 1643-1715). They are primarily of Dutch, French and Portuguese origin, and the texts are in French, Latin, Dutch, Portuguese and English. They range in date from 1616 to no later than 1720. Many are undated. 19 of the smaller maps, mounted two or three to a page, have been identified by Philip Burden as belonging to André Thévet's unpublished work Le Grand Insulaire. (cf.
