    Henry Edward Williams letters, (bulk 1862-1864)

    Manuscripts

    Letters of Henry Edward Williams of the 34th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment from Virginia and West Virginia to his family. In his letters, Williams discusses military operations including the raid on Harrisburg in December 1863, skirmishes outside of Charleston, South Carolina, and encounters with guerrillas. He also mentions his time in Libby Prison and military hospitals, Confederate deserters and prisoners, as well as fugitive slaves. In a letter dated 1864 August 28, Williams expressed his unhappiness about having shared a hospital room with wounded African American soldiers. Also included is a 1914 letter setting up a foundation to benefit the estate of Colonel George D. Wells, one of the commanders of Williams' regiment who died in 1864 after being wounded in battle, other regiment information, and biographies and obituaries of Williams.

    Philip B. Harris photographs of Los Angeles railway surveys and World War I France

    This collection contains photographs taken or compiled by Philip B. Harris, related to his 42-year career with the Los Angeles Railway and his service as a captain in the U.S. Army Engineers, World War I. The majority of railroad construction scenes are related to the Los Angeles Railway, approximately 1905-1920s. Images include: construction and engineering work on railroads in the Los Angeles area; Harris and other men working on surveying projects, 1902, in Mount Lowe and Garvanza; survey parties in the California Sierras and San Bernardino Mountains. Some images appear to depict the Pacific Electric Railway construction surveying party that Harris was put in charge of soon after he graduated, in 1901. A photograph album, 1901-approximately 1919, includes views of Redondo Beach; personal images of Harris and family members; San Pedro Harbor; and railroad tracks being laid for a streetcar line. Several images show Latino workers digging and laying tracks, approximately 1903. The album has handwritten captions for several photographs, but many scenes are unidentified. The images of World War I France include 52 photographs by Harris, with some commercial photographic postcards. Images show war ruins; decorated graves; battlefields; soldiers; people at train stations; countryside scenes, and a group portrait of Harris and other uniformed soldiers at Roymeaux Field, May 21, 1919. There are also photographic postcards of various tourist scenes in France and war-damaged buildings. Box 3 contains a rolled panoramic photograph of over 100 soldiers, including Harris, of the U.S. Army 22nd Corps of Engineers, 1918, at Fort Harrison, Indiana. The collection also includes a typewritten biographical sketch of Harris and a list of names and addresses of engineers and railroad workers from Harris' address book.

    Francis Lieber papers, (bulk 1821-1883)

    A collection of approximately 6000 items from 1815 to 1936, the collection consists of Francis Lieber's correspondence, notes and other manuscripts and published materials accumulated in the preparation of his works during his political and academic career. The collection contains articles, essays, remarks, correspondence, volumes, commonplace books, research files, printed material, and ephemera. The manuscript material often contains various drafts, with supporting research and subject files; the correspondence contains personal and family letters and a large amount of professional correspondence. Correspondents include, among others, his wife Matilda (Mathilde) Lieber, other Lieber family members, Samuel Austin Allibone, Edward Bates, Dorothea Lynde Dix, Hamilton Fish, James A. Garfield, Ulysses S. Grant, Simon Greenleaf, Henry Wager Halleck, George Stillman Hillard, ⁹douard Laboulaye, Carl Joseph Anton Mittermaier, Charles Sumner, Martin Russell Thayer, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Theodore Dwight Woolsey. Subjects in the collection include political science and theory; constitutional history; political economy; international law; philosophy and history of civilization; penology, including Lieber's association with the prison reform movement; education, particularly college and university administration; United States and European politics; antebellum debates and campaigns; slavery and abolitionism; politics of the Civil War, including problems of the citizenship of African-Americans, immigrants, and former Confederates; constitutional powers of the President and Congress; Republican Party, especially its radical wing; military aspects of the Civil War as reflected in Lieber's correspondence with Halleck; reconstruction, including plans for codification of international law; and Lieber's service with the United States-Mexican Claims Commission.

    Lovel Newton Parker papers, (bulk 1862-1865)

    Manuscripts

    A collection of 51 items from 1794 to 1917, it consists of six pocket diaries kept by Lovel Newton Parker during his military service in the American Civil War. The detailed daily entries give accounts of military campaigns, camp life, war and political news. These diaries were incorporated in Parker's memoirs written sometime after the war. The collection contains a fair copy and a typescript of the memoirs. Also included is a group of miscellaneous documents: receipts, bills, deeds, and promissory notes of Lovel Parker and his family, a few family letters and pieces of correspondence pertaining to the veterans' association of the 105th Regiment.

    Mansfield Lovell papers, (bulk 1862-1865)

    A collection of 422 items from 1835 to 1886, it consists of military, personal, and family papers of Mansfield Lovell. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, dispatches, communications, reports, and other military records accumulated by Lovell during his military career, particularly his command of Department No. 1. Correspondents include Judah P. Benjamin, Johnson K. Duncan, Joseph E. Johnston, and others. Also included are Lovell's letter books, special and general order books, and items relating to Lovell's Court of Inquiry. The collection also includes a group of manuscripts dealing with Lovell's Mexican War experience, including his journals from 1848 to 1849, correspondence, memoranda, and other items. Personal and family papers include letters to Mansfield Lovell from his brother Joseph Lovell written from Yale, Williams College, Poughkeepsie Collegiate School, and elsewhere from 1836 to 1847, Lovell's valedictory address at West Point, notes on travel in Virginia, New York, and Canada from 1842 to1843, correspondence between Mansfield Lovell and Emily Plympton Lovell from 1862 to 1863, and miscellaneous papers dealing with the family property.
