Description

Project for the Italian Government with notes, 15 photographic postcards, and correspondence with the Italian Ambassador. The bulk of this file is a compilation of manuscript alphabetical biographical entries, similar to the Sculptors Dictionary.

Provenance
Purchased by the Huntington Library in 1962. The collection was initially accessioned into the Huntington Art Reference Library in 1962. Sometime afterwards, the printed books and pamphlets were removed, separately catalogued, and shelved with the main body of the Art Reference Books, and the photographs were removed to the Photo Study Collection. In 2005, the Art Reference Library collection was merged into the main collection of the Huntington Library and the decision was made to re-integrate the printed material and photographs of the Esdaile collection into the papers.

The book is a thick address book with alphabetical entries for individual sculptors and schools/geographical areas of sculptors and to have nothing to do with 'wills' or 'patents.' This is possibly an early version of the Sculptors Dictionary.

    63 letters including several references to the Sculptors Dictionary; the rejection of the play "Unlucky John" by the BBC; 5 letters from Harry Batsford (Publisher) about a book on British Sculptors or Sculpture (to be eventually published as "English Church Monuments"); and 11 letters from Sacheverell Sitwell, mainly about their common problems with Batsford.
