Description

This box contains copy prints ranging in size from 9 x 6 cm to 17 x 24 cm, one photostat (item 96), and some original cartes-de-visite (items 74-81, 95); a cabinet card (item 80); two 1913 postcards (items 45 and 58); and an original snapshot (item 57). All items are photographs; if the item description indicates "lithograph" or another technique, it indicates a photograph of a lithograph.

The prints have handwritten descriptions on the versos or on an accompanying sheet of paper, which vary from a few handwritten words to several typewritten sentences. There is a discrepancy in the identifications of some of the people in the photographs. See Dolley's manuscripts for alternative identifications for some photographs.

    Photographs of California and North America

    Visual Materials

    A collection of 49 photographs chiefly of California, especially San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Yosemite National Park. Items 1-38 and 46 depict California locales; items 39-49 consist of miscellaneous views including two images of New England; a group portrait at Niagara Falls; and two images in Montreal, Canada. Most of the photographs are signed by photographer Alfred J. Perkins (Items 1-36); one view of Santa Cruz is signed by Reese (Item 46); the other photographers are unidentified. Photographs were removed from cards (date unknown) and mounted on 20 x 26 cm-21 x 28 cm board.
