    A collection of writs of execution, exhibits, bills of complaints, depositions, legal opinions, subpoenas, and other documents from the files the Middle Circuit, 5th Circuit, 4th Circuit, Virginia Circuit, Virginia District and Eastern Virginia District courts. Most cases concern libel, felony, and misdemeanor, and bankruptcy trials and proceedings, with a few admiralty and maritime suits. Included are papers relating to various lawsuits of the Second Bank of the United States

    Manuscripts

    Papers, chiefly routine correspondence with a few documents, accumulated by the editors and managers. Included are accounts, advertisements, letters from contributors, readers, subscribers, and advertisers, correspondence relating to the merger with Richmond Examiner (1866) and the company management. The majority of the letters are addressed to George C. Wedderburn and W. W. Berry.

Included are individual items related to finances of the Revolutionary War and Early Republic, including pensions paid to the war veterans, and John Jacob Astor's "proposal for loaning monies to the United States," (1813), a group of documents and letters relative to Nathaniel Denby, U.S. Naval agent in Marseilles in 1845-1851, and correspondents and documents addressed to various customs collectors and internal revenues agents, predominantly in Virginia
