One painting book entitled The Easy Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1904. The front cover shows a young girl standing next to a small pony. On the back cover in the lower right-hand corner is the company's trademark and "No. 84." The inside front cover features six colored circles--yellow, red, blue, orange, green, and purple-- which are identified as Primary Colors and Secondary Colors. These colors were meant as a guide for coloring in the book's images and, as explained in the instructions printed on the inside of the back cover, they are the actual pigments to be used (with water) to apply color within the book itself. These colors appear to have been used. Six color images, including the cover and title page, are included. Four colored images are matched by four identical images printed only in outline. Many of the outlined images have been filled in using watercolor. In the upper right hand corner of the title page, in pencil, is written "JX 5--".

Books without Words. (Volume First)--Color and Form

One set of paper weavings created by Emily M. Coe, New York, comprised of 23 paper weavings in five "books" (each with 4 weavings) plus three loose "pages." The books are labeled: "No. 1, Primary Colors--Curvilinear"; No. 2, "Secondary Colors--Rectilinear Solids"; No. 3, "Complimentary Colors and Quadrangles"; No. 4, "Tertiary Colors--Polygons"; and the fifth (unnumbered), "Mixed Tertiaries--Triangles". The first part of the title refers to the four paper weavings, the latter, to the printed images of shapes on the reverse of each page.

Artist's Scrap Book

One set of art reproductions entitled Artist's Scrap Book, arranged by Pedro J. Lemos, published by The School Arts Magazine, Davis Press, Worcester, Massachusetts, 1929. This portfolio of art reproductions is comprised of 104 numbered plates and an illustrated publisher's advertisement for the portfolio. Each of the plates contain numerous images of artworks by a variety of artists. Each plate is numbered and the images are grouped and labeled by category. Some of the categories included are: Hillside Houses, Decorative Trees, Fantastic Figures, Busy Women, Feminine Activities, Colonial People, Figure Groups, Children of the Eighties, Foreign Lands, Birds, Animals, and Flowers. "Courtesy of the Ladies' Home Journal" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of each plate. The set of plates is housed within an illustrated paperboard folder; a paper label containing the contents list is mounted to the inside of the front cover. "Mabel Spofford" is written in ms., in pencil, on some of the plates.

The Falcon Best Crayons with Color Book

One boxed set of crayons entitled The Falcon Best Crayons with Color Book, High Grade 14 Colors, No. 163 on the front and "The Falcon Best Crayons, Fine Quality, No. 163" on the reverse. The cover of the box shows a young boy using the crayons to draw in the enclosed coloring book. The cardboard box slides open to reveal the small coloring book and the crayons. The book, The Leisure Hour Drawing Book for Instructive Sketching and Coloring Purposes, contains 16 printed images to color. Of the crayons, only 7 remain intact. Others, including two from a different manufacturer, are in pieces.

Palette Painting Book

One painting book entitled Palette Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1892. The cover of the painting book shows a young man holding a painted image while a young girl takes his arm. The back cover depicts a watercolor set, water, brushes, paint tube, and compass. The inside front cover lists "a few practical instructions for young painters" including suggestions on what colors to include in the student's watercolor set and how to mix them. The book is designed so that the student studies a colored image and then apply color to an outline image. There are a total of 22 images: eleven in color and eleven in outline. The images depict various scenes of people, children, animals, and nursery rhyme characters with tag lines at the bottom. None of the images have been filled in. A "10.00" is penciled in on the upper-right corner of the title page.
