One book entitled Practical Drawing, Correlated Art Edition, Book Two, by Practical Drawing Company of Dallas and Chicago, copyright 1930. The subtitle is: A series of school art books for the Grades. It is 44 pages in length, and features relatively simple illustrations and craft projects, illustrated both in color and in black and white. The front and back covers have a dark blue background, with orange lettering. The front cover is illustrated with a small, octagonal vignette from a children's tale, and the back cover contains a stylized logo of the Practical Drawing Company, also within an octagonal frame. The insides of the front and back cover are patterned with a bird and tree motif. The drawing, coloring and lettering exercises, craft projects and picture studies within this book are aimed at grade school children. Each exercise or project is accompanied by instructional text. A few examples of these projects are: toy drawing, classroom decoration making, paper basket making, story illustration and clay modeling. The last 3 pages are devoted to picture studies of 4 famous works of art: "Miss Bowles" by Sir Joshua Reynolds, "Saying Grace" by Jean Baptiste Chardin, "Shoeing the Mare" by Sir Edwin Landseer, and "Feeding Her Birds" by Jean Francois Millet.

The leaflet, a single sheet folded into sixths, is 12 unnumbered pages in length. Nine distinct craft projects promote the use of Crayola colored crayons. The projects are described and illustrated.

One drawing book entitled Practical Drawing, Art Education Edition, Book 5 by Practical Drawing Company of Chicago and Dallas, copyright 1925. The book contains both black and white and color illustrations, some of which are meant to be copied in the space provided (the facing page); others are studies in color, image, composition or proportion. The front cover features a color illustration of two young girls in mid-19th century dress playing with a stick and hoop on the front steps of a home. The back cover features the logo of the Practical Drawing Company. The insides of the front and back covers are decorated with a pale orange geometric pattern. The contents of this drawing book include a mixture drawing lessons, craft projects and picture studies of both old and modern paintings, posters, and illustrations. Instructions to students for further creative work accompany many of the illustrations and images. "50 [cents symbol]" is written in ms., in blue pencil, on the upper right hand corner of the first leaf inside the front cover.

One drawing book entitled System of Industrial Art Drawing: Ornamentation, by E. Croasdale, published by J.M. Stoddart & Co., Philadelphia, copyright 1876. Also printed on the front cover is: "Issued in sets from the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, by E. Croasdale, Principal, Second Series, Number Three." This book contains 7 plates (plate VIII is wanting) of Egyptian design and motif. Each plate is faced by a blank page intended for copying. This book is vertically oriented, with the cover and pages intended to be lifted up, instead of to the left, as usual.

Vere Foster's Complete Course of Drawing: Landscape

One drawing book entitled Vere Foster's Complete Course of Drawing, published by Blackie & Son, Limited, London, Glasgow and Dublin; and F.W. Devoe & Co., New York, ca. 1868. New Edition, 72 pages (only pages 6-8 are numbered) part VI (of XVI). This drawing book provides visual and textual instruction for landscape drawing. The first 8 pages, presumably written by Wimperis and Needham, contain instructional text. The black and white lithographs are signed primarily by J. Needham and F. (Frederick) Jones. The illustrated front cover is printed in blue ink; the back cover is a manufacturers' advertisement for "Vere Foster's Drawing Copy-Books". At the top of the back cover is the statement: "Vere Foster's Drawing Copy-Books have been adopted by the Department of Science and Art, South Kensignton, London; and both Writing and Drawing Copy-Books have been adopted by the Commissioners of National Education in Ireland, by the London and other principal School Boards, and by the Department of Public Instruction of the City of New York." The illustrations within this drawing book include both outline and complete views of English and Welsh landscapes, homes, bridges, and other natural views.

Drawing Teacher

One boxed set of paper stencils entitled Drawing Teacher, manufactured by Parker Brothers, Salem, Massachusetts, ca. 1895. The set is comprised of 10 paper stencils which include images of animals, people, and buildings. Also included are two printed sheets of paper, one a set of instructions for the stencils, the other a manufacturer's illustrated advertisement for several board games. The set is housed within a paperboard box that has a color illustrated paper label mounted to the top lid. The image is of a girl holding a stencil in one hand and a completed picture in the other. "John S. Blood" is stamped, in ink, in the upper left-hand corner of the top stencil. The stencils are housed separately from the box. "Lucy Pinkham, East Steuben, ME Dec. 25, 1899." is written in ms., in pencil, twice, on the underside of the box bottom.
